6 Series (G32) [Official] BMW 6er GT (G32)

The BMW G32 is the fourth generation 6 Series, which went on sale from 2017 to 2023. The body style of the G32 is a 5-door fastback and it is marketed as "6 Series Gran Turismo" (replacing the previous generation 5 Series Gran Turismo).
Why this is 6 GT and not a 5 GT? BMW 6 (Coupe, conv., grancoupe) were stunning, but this is not what I expect from a 6 series and IMO doesn't deserve 6-series badge.

Bleh.. it's not a 6er. One of my least favourite BMW's just got repackaged as.. the same thing..

I think five pages about the name should be enough, can we just move on and discuss the car as the car, and not its name ?

While at it why dont we restart discussion about how the 4er should have been named 3er coupe.

Or A5 and A4 coupe.

Lets talk about the car instead

@Enl So, when the 3-GT is rebaged as a 4GT, will it use the same philosophy as this vehicle? meaning a platform and wheelbase shared 5 series with a 3 series interior?

Lets hope BMW pull a Mercedes and rename this vehicle at its facelift, back to a 5 series.

Now that the initial shock is over, and I've had time to look at it...it actually doesn't look bad at all. It's actually a decent looking vehicle that should sell better than the previous model. It's a 5-Series inside and out though, so I will never understand why BMW chose to piss on the legendary 6-Series label by calling this a "6-Series". Oh well, I could live with it as 5GT, because name aside it's not bad on the eyes.

M

Exactly my thoughts. Nothing else to add.

Yep, it's now in the "5 meter Club" with its 5,091mm length (which is roughly the same as SWB G11 7er with 5,098mm; and slightly longer than LWB G33 5er @ 5,069mm).

The wheelbase of 3,070mm is the same as of G11 SWB 7er. No surprise since the chassis is taken directly from 7er's textbook (eg. two axle air suspension etc), so it's now basically a 7er-based car with 5er interior styling & layout. 5er LWB is still very much standard 5er's chassis but extended - featuring no 2-axle air suspension.

The comfort (ride, noise isolation, seats etc) is so much better than the one of the 5er. So this time around this baby is actually a more practical 7er; yet still cheaper, thus 5er-like interior.

Being lighter, lower, featuring all the chassis goodies form 7er makes the 6er GT also much more dynamic than 5er GT.

That's why the upgrade in the Series & price positioning. It's much better car it is replacing. More comfortable, more dynamic, much more 7er than 5er. To show it that it's still a class below 7er the interior is more 5er than 7er though.

TwinGate feature was not popular & widely appreciated. It wasn't cheap to made & it added extra weight & ate into boot space & contributed to the overall higher tail. So it was scrapped.

Price increase due to higher Series positioning is just about +5%, since approx +5% price increase for the new Mk would be exercised anyway - even if Mk2 being labeled as 5er GT.

Mind primary market for this car is China. A vast majority of 5er GTs have been sold there. Which took BMW a bit by surprised since they planned Europe & US to be the key markets for 5er GT. It looks like Chinese just love big, long, roomy premium vehicles ... no matter of shapes & types. That's why iNext will be big & roomy as well.

The same wheel base as 7er is totally different than the same wheelbase of the old 5gt. But "No surprise since the chassis is taken directly from 7er's textbook" would suppose that it uses the CFRP in the area of the central tunnel and the area under the doors like in the video below. But no word of CFRP yet.

More or less. That's possible now with CLARx platform (x being platform generation / version eg. 1, 2, 3).

The "new" nomenclature is much more following the price positioning rather the type of the vehicle itself.

Therefore eg. 2er includes coupe, cabrio, mini-van & van etc ... since 2er > 1er in terms of price. Same happened with 4er (coupe, cabrio etc ... GT will join the family with Mk2). And same with 6er - since 5er GT was more expensive & larger than standard 5er models 5er Gt is now getting 6er badge. While Mk3 6er coupe & cabrio are getting 8er badge. Btw, additional 6er and 8er models are being considered! Stay tuned!

So ... 1er < 2er < 3er < 4er < 5er < 6er < 7er < 8er ... and ... X1 < X2 < X3 < X4 < X5 < X6 < X7 (< X8)

Such positioning will eventually enable upgrading of some of the niche models in the future ... eg. some 2ers being more 3ers tahn 1ers; 4ers being more 5ers than 3ers; 6ers being more 7ers than 5ers; 8ers being positioned above 7er etc.

In the end it is all about the marketing game...stuff all about the heritage behind the series name.

I have yet to see so much hatred and dismissal on a new model. Positive feelings are just very few among the load of spitting going on in this thread. Calling this a car a turd is not at all an example of a bright mind, it is just plain silliness, with all due respect. Period.

The 6er Reihe, as we know today, is approaching its conclusion. As I have said in a previous post, adding the successor of the 5er GT in the 6er family might dilute the whole purpose of this model series. But it also heralds a new perspective for the BMW model family.

The 5er GT is a niche model and now, for further differentiation from the core 5er family, it was added to the 6er Reihe as to signal its added premium factor. In the future, the same thing will happen to the 3er GT - it will become 4er GT (putting the future of the 4er Gran Coupe in doubt). If the 2er Coupe can co-exist with the 2er Active Tourer, for instance, why cannot this car be named 6er?

I see the new 6er GT as a more attractive and robust proposition to the current 5er GT. It is a very elegant car, with clearly defined, striking lines, boasting a more dynamic and coherent stance and enhanced premium feel, especially inside. Adding the technological avant-garde and the improved dynamics and handling, I think it will sell better than the current generation.

P.S.: The "GT" label on the panels of the rear doors feels very refined.

The 640i GT is EUR 22.500 cheaper than the 740i.
Same wheelbase and virtually the same length.
Air suspension on both axles just like the 7er.
More headroom and luggage space.
150kg. less than the outgoing 5GT meaning it's much lighter/sportier than the G11.

Looks aside... this has to be the best value for money family cruiser on the luxury market.
While for most people the G30 would be plenty spacious at the back... most of my male friends are 185cm. tall and above. With me at the driver's seat they would all rather be in the 6GT especially on a long trip where the GT will shine the brightest with its superior leg and headroom.

PS: It's a unique proposition from BMW one could only appreciate once they take a ride in the backseat of one.
Did I mention that the car is still disproportionate and ugly ?

Seriously looks like we're dealing with a bunch of kids here. Incredible. Who the F cares about the name?
Then again, it's mostly the crybaby MB fanboys 'complaining'. Nothing new.
