Now that the initial shock is over, and I've had time to look at it...it actually doesn't look bad at all. It's actually a decent looking vehicle that should sell better than the previous model. It's a 5-Series inside and out though, so I will never understand why BMW chose to piss on the legendary 6-Series label by calling this a "6-Series". Oh well, I could live with it as 5GT, because name aside it's not bad on the eyes.
M
Yep, it's now in the "5 meter Club" with its 5,091mm length (which is roughly the same as SWB G11 7er with 5,098mm; and slightly longer than LWB G33 5er @ 5,069mm).
The wheelbase of 3,070mm is the same as of G11 SWB 7er. No surprise since the chassis is taken directly from 7er's textbook (eg. two axle air suspension etc), so it's now basically a 7er-based car with 5er interior styling & layout. 5er LWB is still very much standard 5er's chassis but extended - featuring no 2-axle air suspension.
The comfort (ride, noise isolation, seats etc) is so much better than the one of the 5er. So this time around this baby is actually a more practical 7er; yet still cheaper, thus 5er-like interior.
Being lighter, lower, featuring all the chassis goodies form 7er makes the 6er GT also much more dynamic than 5er GT.
That's why the upgrade in the Series & price positioning. It's much better car it is replacing. More comfortable, more dynamic, much more 7er than 5er. To show it that it's still a class below 7er the interior is more 5er than 7er though.
TwinGate feature was not popular & widely appreciated. It wasn't cheap to made & it added extra weight & ate into boot space & contributed to the overall higher tail. So it was scrapped.
Price increase due to higher Series positioning is just about +5%, since approx +5% price increase for the new Mk would be exercised anyway - even if Mk2 being labeled as 5er GT.
Mind primary market for this car is China. A vast majority of 5er GTs have been sold there. Which took BMW a bit by surprised since they planned Europe & US to be the key markets for 5er GT. It looks like Chinese just love big, long, roomy premium vehicles ... no matter of shapes & types. That's why iNext will be big & roomy as well.
I will put money on them leading with "THE FIRST EVER 6 SERIES GRAN TURISMO...", like it's some new kind of vehicle we've never seen before.
@Enl So, when the 3-GT is rebaged as a 4GT, will it use the same philosophy as this vehicle? meaning a platform and wheelbase shared 5 series with a 3 series interior?
Shakal said:Why this is 6 GT and not a 5 GT? BMW 6 (Coupe, conv., grancoupe) were stunning, but this is not what I expect from a 6 series and IMO doesn't deserve 6-series badge.
When will these marketing people ever learn..? Being 1st is not necessary a good thing, and there is a good reason why nobody else has done it before.![]()
Winner.
Btw, additional 6er and 8er models are being considered! Stay tuned!
For the german market:
BMW 630i GT: 62.300 Euro
BMW 640i GT: 68.100 Euro
BMW 640i GT xDrive: 70.700 Euro
BMW 630d GT: 66.900 Euro
BMW 630d GT xDrive: 69.500 Euro
BMW 6er GT: Preis ab 62.300 Euro, deutlich teurer als bisher
I think five pages about the name should be enough, can we just move on and discuss the car as the car, and not its name ?
While at it why dont we restart discussion about how the 4er should have been named 3er coupe.
Or A5 and A4 coupe.
Lets talk about the car instead
