How can you say the X1 looks good ? It is one of the worst looking SUVs on the marker in my opinion ...

X1 is not really an SUV, is it? Besides, IMHO, it looks good. I never said, nor meant, that X1 is the best looking car in its segment, but it does look way better IRL, than in pictures. On the scale 1-10, I would give it strong 7. But that's just me, I guess some 100.000+ X1 customers a year would know better.

I have to say, I saw LCI X1, and it seemed loaded with options, definately not basic.

Not sure I agree with this statement at all. Here in the US, the Evoque is around $50k (upper 40s to mid 50s), and much more than the X1. The GLA will likely be MUCH less expensive and priced below the GLK. (Much like the CLA is priced below the C-class) Here, it is not a volume model, which the GLA will most certainly be.

I wasn't sure Evoque is even competitor to the GLA, until that article from gmotors suggested it.

So, if it is, price is important, but I don't think that is the only (and the most important) attribute. Evoque is selling like hot cakes, so when I said it will be GLA's fiercest competitor, I was thinking more in the terms of numbers sold. I do see a point in your post, however

In 2012, BMW sold 147.776 units of the X1. Does anyone know the Evoque sales numbers?

I guess it is all matter of tastes, but I strongly dislike the X1 and X3 as well as the 1er ..
I think the strongest competitor of the GLA is the Evoque which is better looking .

The Mercedes GLA is a rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 and is expected to have an early 2014 release date

The Mercedes GLA is the firm’s rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. It will be Mercedes’ first small SUV and is based on the Mercedes Concept GLA, which wowed the crowds at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year.

The GLA will debut in production form at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and is the fourth car to be based on Mercedes’ Modular Front-drive Architecture (MFA) – following the A-Class, B-Class and CLA. A fifth car, the CLA Shooting Brake, is due next year.

The Mercedes Concept GLA used a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with 208bhp to drive all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox. Expect the final version to offer a selection of A-Class-sourced four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, with either front-wheel drive or a front-biased 4MATIC 4WD system.

All versions of the Mercedes GLA are five seaters, and while the crossover will feature dimensions that are pretty similar to the Mercedes A-Class, which measures 4,292mm long, 1,780mm wide and 1,433mm high, it will ride a little higher to give drivers a more commanding view of the road.

There were previous rumours of a Mercedes GLA 2013 release date, but the model is now expected to go on sale in early 2014. The Mercedes GLA price will start at around £5,000 more than the A-Class range’s entry-level price tag of £20,370.

However, buyers will be able to select from a huge range of equipment options, including Mercedes’ latest safety and driver assistance systems, which will bump up the price accordingly.

In addition to the regular variants of the Mercedes GLA, an AMG version will be offered. The GLA45 AMG will use the same 355bhp 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine, seven-speed dual clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive system as the A45 AMG.

The Mercedes GLA shouldn’t be confused with the boxy Mercedes GLK that’s only sold in left-hand drive. The GLK is a larger car, based on the Mercedes C-Class, but will be sold in right-hand drive in its next iteration. A new C-Class is expected to debut at the Detroit Motor Show in 2014.

saw a prototype on the street two days ago. The car looked so unbelievably small!! it seemed much smaller than both X1 and Q3. It might be the DLO and the lack of a third window on the side, but I was really surprised!

Mercedes-Benz published the first design drawings of the GLA today. The model celebrates its world premiere at the IAA 2013.

The GLA is based on the NGCC platform (New Generation Compact Cars) which is already known from the new A-Class (W176), B-Class (W246) and the CLA Coupe (C117).

MB Passion will post first pictures of the production model, the GLA (X156), on Wednesday. A first teaser video of the GLA production model is already expected tomorrow.

Autoevolution talks about the designer. The internal code is X156 and not X164 (previous GL-Class generation), though.


The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA (X164) crossover is getting nearer to its official production version launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in September. So near, in fact, that Mercedes-Benz has decided to start its teasing campaign for the model.

Although as far as we know the event is not exactly part of an official campaign, the sketches for the car that were recently posted on the official Mercedes-Benz page on Facebook are obviously official, since they are also signed by the GLA main exterior designer, Robert Lesnik.

If his name rings any bells, you might have heard of him as being in charge of the Volkswagen Passat B6, modern Scirocco or the Eos. For the last four years he's been at Mercedes-Benz, where his imprint can also be seen on the W222 S-Class.

The production version of the GLA was already previewed by the GLA Concept, shown at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year, and these sketches are more in tune with what we saw at that time.

The production version will be based on the A-Class platform, a lot of similar features being shared by the two models, starting from most of the interior to almost every engine in their lineup, including the high-performance 45 AMG variant.
