Two prototypes of the 2016 Audi A4 snapped in Mumbai – Spied

Ahead of its global premiere, which will take place shortly before the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, two prototypes of the 2016 Audi A4 were snapped testing in Mumbai, India. Prior to the global reveal of its models, Audi tests its vehicles in India, as ex-Audi India Head, Mr. Michael Perschke, said the country’s roads provide a good test location with varied weather and road surfaces.

I agree with everything you say but would like to highlight one point. As someone who drives that engine on a Golf daily, I have to say I am pleasantly surprissed with how good the I4 turbocharged is. I have read there is a evolution of this engine planned for the B9 and IMO it is the engine to buy the car with.

And same for the bimmer Martin. Maybe the fuel consumption was important for you back in the day, but I would say a 328i would provide more fun than a 320d, even when the latter is a fantastic engine.

That's what I was implying when I said "decidedly sprightlier" - the 2.0 T in VAG's stable is a great engine and still a match for BMW's equally excellent new 2.0 litre turbo inline 4.

As I use the car for business 95% of the time and for thrills 5% of the time, I expect to continue with the diesel 3er route for the foreseeable future. I am very impressed with the 140 kW, 400 NM B47 engine as this provides a nice balance between guilt-free performance and fuel economy with the added bonus of improved refinement. The problem with any turbopetrol engine is that, when used in anger, it is much thirstier than official figures suggest.

In my urban commute I get over 900 km on every tank. This is still important to me. If only BMW SA agreed to bring in at least one 25d variant in either the 3er or 4er GC models - that for me would be pretty much perfect.

So, for pleasure: Petrol >>> Diesel
For work: Petrol < Diesel

IMHO of course.

Unfortunately, Audi's 2.0 TDi has a poor reputation for reliability here in sunny SA so my recommendation to any prospective A4 buyer would be to go with the better 2.0 T engine and pay a bit more at the pumps. I wouldn't mind trying out their new 2.0 BiTDi engine too out of curiosity sake. I look forward to seeing the engine line-up of the new B9 A4.

A4 to be unveiled in the following days

The next generation Audi S4 Avant and S5 Coupe have been caught on camera yet again, this time providing a better look at the interior.

Just like the exterior, Audi is playing it safe by taking the evolutionary route as far as the cabin's layout which isn't all that different compared to the outgoing model. The S4 Avant spotted with the door open was most likely a lesser trim as it had conventional dials whereas upper-spec models are likely going to be offered with a fully digital instrument cluster as seen in the latest TT and Q7.

We notice the new three-spoke steering wheel wrapped around in leather and a metallic strip on the door panels and dashboard while from a previous set of spy shots we saw a similar metallic strip on the car's sides and at the back. The red emergency button indicates this is a test prototype so it might not have all the final bits and pieces, but we do notice what appears to be a bigger rotary knob for the MMI infotainment system.

Audi has announced the A4 (B9) will be introduced before the end of this month, but the S4 probably won't be out until early 2016. The next generation A5 should follow a few months later and it will be eventually joined by a new S5.

This is such an awful interior wow. Just the area where the light switch is and air vent looks so cheap. Very dated design.

I'm seriously so disappointed in this A4. It looks cheap inside and out. After the A3, I had such high expectations for the A4, thinking that the virtues of its younger brother would only be exemplified and built-upon in the A4.

The A4 is much like the Q7. Boring, lifeless, overly stoic and austere interior, and tired.

I agree, it's really not looking good at all so far. Very strange. Ike said the A3 and TT in particular have fantastic looking interiors. The new Q7 is kind of boring and the new A4 downright ugly. WTF is happening?

I'm especially disappointed because I thought VAG was going all out with the car. I thought delays with the Q7 (and now with the A4) meant they were taking the time to make sure they were making a fantastic product.

Klier, I agree with your opinion on the A3 and TT interiors. They really are something special. However, I think the issue is how those design philosophies translate onto a larger vehicle. While the minimalism/empty space might look fitting on a small interior, I think the same concept applied to a larger vehicle (such as the Q7/A4) might convey a sense of laziness instead.

I thought with VAGs resources we would see them knock the ball out of the park for such a key vehicle. Say what you will about the old A4 but it really did a lot for Audi as a brand. The A4/A5/Q5 lineup made them a serious competitor again and it is sad to see their successors looking the way they do.

This might not be the popular opinion but I'd rather ugly than boring.

Soon, a very soon! Wouh, those lights!

2016 Audi A4 Sedan and Avant Teased, Will Debut on June 29 - Video

Audi did say that the new A4 would be revealed by the end of the month. And they were right, as an official teaser video was uploaded to Facebook today and states both the sedan and the wagon will be shown on June 29.

Audi MediaTV handles the debut, which means we're going to see web content, not a live event where people are invited. Still, A4 fans have been waiting to see this car for the best part of two years.

Built on a new platform, the compact executive models will make extensive use of aluminum construction, just like the Q7 flagship SUV. The design will be evolutionary, with sharp lines and a wide hexagonal grille, just like the Prologue concept.

We've seen a few spy images of the interior and so far there's no sight of the Virtual Cockpit system. But we're pretty sure it will be offered sooner rather than later.

For us at least, the engine range is going to be the most interesting. Audi has already discussed a new type of 2.0 TFSI petrol mill that's said to consume only 5 l/100km on the combined cycle. That's likely to go into an A4 ultra model though the diesels will be even more efficient. We expect a plug-in hybrid TDI will also be introduced with around 240 PS and 50+ kilometers of electric driving range.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll get to see the S4 models at the same time as the A4 like it happened at the TT/TTS debut. We're quite excited to see if the arrival of a new generation compact spells the start of a new performance diesel era.

So for Monday's big debut, be prepared to hear about weight reduction and increased cabin space.

Geez, what a tacky DtRL graphics. :banghead: C'mon, Audi! (n)

Audi needs some consistency here ... Every new Audi model comes with different DtRL LED graphics now. IMHO it's getting very annoying.

Even MB (bar E-class) came up with consistent DtRL graphics. Even VW is getting consistent. Lexus too. And other carmakers are also coming up with more consistent headlights (and even rear light graphics - at least in basic shape). While BMW's headlights graphics (quad projectors / coronas) are a part of core design trademarks for decades now. So are the L-shaped rear lights & LED graphics.

But I'm eager too see this new A4 (B9) - especially the interior. Could it (the interior in particular) be a winner, or indeed a bit of a let down (based on spy pics)?

Should I inject some caffeine or adrenalin into my bloodstream on June 29 - not to fall asleep instantly when being hit with B9 pics? :D:p

I had a notion that Audi would distract from the boring design using fancy LEDs but those are beyond my imagination. Let's get the cat out of the bag. Roll on Monday!!

I don't mind Audi keeping different led designs for each model, their basic headlamp and tailamp design structure is more or less the same for all the models, a different led detailing will at least make them look distinctive, otherwise we may only complain that duh all their cars end up looking the same ;):bangin:

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
