Audi S1 confirmed for Geneva Motor Show


Audi will reveal its 230bhp S1 quattro model in March, ahead of UK sales starting in May

Audi will unveil its long-awaited S1 hatchback model at the Geneva Motor Show in March, an inside source has confirmed. Powered by a 230bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine found under the bonnet of the Audi S3, it will feature quattro four-wheel drive as standard.


As our exclusive image shows, the styling is a subtle evolution of the standard A1, with a deeper bodykit, larger intakes in the front bumper and an S1 badge glued to the grille. It is expected that the S1 variant will be available in both three-door hatchback and five-door Sportback guises with the option of several unique colours, plus quad exhausts.

A dual-clutch S tronic automatic gearbox will be offered, although it’s still unclear whether this or a six-speed manual will be standard fit.

Due to be launched in Geneva alongside the all-new Audi TT, the new S1 hatchback should go on sale in the UK in May. There’s no official word on pricing or specification as yet, but a source suggested it will be similar to the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which means a starting price in the region of £27,000.

True though with the performance pack the GTI is almost puts out as much but personally I prefer the look of the Golf to that of the A1 which is also smaller and less practical.

With the Performance Pack, the Golf puts out EXACTLY the same power as the S1. Assuming the power figure for the S1 is correct and they mean 230hp (227bhp).

I wasn't second guessing that so used the word 'almost'.

It will be interesting to see a comparison between these two because the Performance pack GTI is pretty hand on the track.

The lease expires in September, and I will be returning it. The plan at the moment is to replace it with a BMW M135i (3-door), but when I get that depends on when the 1 Series LCI happens. Also, other cars may take my fancy by then....

You could say that about many different car comparisons!! It's a ridiculous argument.

but not in this instance, similar money, similar power, newer MQB chassis, it's a difficult sell for the S1, made even more difficult by the near identical Polo R that will arrive at the same time but cheaper.

2014 Audi S1 Quattro leaked, debuts tomorrow

The 2014 Audi S1 Quattro has leaked to the web ahead of its debut tomorrow morning.

Looking suitably aggressive, the hatchback has been equipped with a sporty front bumper, mesh grille inserts and LED-infused headlights with red accents. The model also has extended side skirts, attractive alloy wheels and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. We can also see dark metallic mirrors and "quattro" badging on the rear passenger side door.

Detailed specifications will be announced tomorrow but the model is expected to use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 230 HP (169 kW). It will reportedly be connected to a six-speed manual transmission and a standard quattro all-wheel drive system.
