Spotted in Germany
A fully camouflaged prototype of the 2016 Audi S4 Avant has been spotted by an Instagram user.

Practical and powerful, the S4 Avant is getting ready to receive a new generation which is expected to bring an increase in size even though the model is bound to lose around 100 kg (220 lbs) thanks to the MLB Evo platform. The outgoing mode offers 490 liters of trunk space with the rear seats up and 1,430 liters once you fold them down so expect these numbers to grow a little bit as a result of the increased proportions.

Underneath the hood will likely reside an uprated version of the TFSI V6 3.0-liter from the outgoing model where it generates 333 PS (245 kW) and 400 Nm (324 lb-ft). We won’t be too surprised if Audi’s engineers will squeeze up to 360 PS (265 kW) from this engine and coupled to the weight loss it should greatly improve performances. As a reminder, the current S4 Avant sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and tops out at an electronically-capped 155 mph (100 km/h).

In terms of design, the heavy amount of camouflage on the prototype doesn't show any of the body details, but previous spy photos of the sedan have shown Audi will play it safe and go for an evolutionary design which will be a bit sharper compared to today's styling.

Audi will show the regular A4 B9 this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show so expect the S4 / S4 Avant to come out probably in the second half of next year while the range-topping RS4 won't be out sooner than 2017.

Dislike it a lot. C pillar looks horrible, overhangs are big, and even the front looks awkward at best.

It's just a mess. Inside out. It's a terrible mix between ugly and boring.

Audi really needs some huge push in terms of design. This car (and the Q7) is a shame.

The Q7 design was ok in my opinion. This however is not. It really looks like the old A4. Let's see how it looks in the flesh. Certainly doesn't look as good or new as the A3. And that car is two years older.

Last decade, Audi was a benchmark for design, but it really seems that the design studio has just been sitting on their hands for the las few years. I know Lichte had very little input in the upcoming A4, but he really needs to light a fire under his designers' respective arses.

That said, it will probably still sell well on the strength of their engine options.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
