I cannot belive too... Where did you get this information?
Clearly it isn't based on the previous car, its way too big now for that.

You do realize that cars that share a platform, don't have to look alike? That pic proves nothing. Their sizes are more similar than dissimilar.
M
I do know that. I am not talking about the shape but about the proportions and the size. It is not because it has 300C/Thema side mirrors it is based on it, by the way that is the only common exterior part that is not from Maserati. But that is nothing new, the GranTurismo also has Alfa 159 side mirrors.
The 300C/Thema is a front-engined car with rear-wheel drive, not like the A6, but like the 5 Series. The Maserati however is is a mid-engined car, like the Ferrari F12, with transaxle gearbox and rear-wheel drive. I do not see any possibility in modifying a chassis to such extent, pushing the engine further back and putting the gearbox over the other side, rearwards. And if the Maserati Ghilbi will also get the same classical Maserati layout (FMR for rear biased weight distribution) then also that will not be based on the Chrysler/Lancia.

The old car is a classic now, thats the first thing. Looks much better proportioned than the new car.
That is a good point, and I hope you're right because this car is lost if they used a 15 year old W210 E-Class hand me downs as a base point. However I suspect modifying the chassis for a front-mid engine layout (not a true mid-engine as you state) is still cheaper than a from scratch new chassis. Just a guess. Only the front structure would need to be changed so the engine can sit fully behind the front axle line. Still though there are too many Chrysler interior pieces, warmed over with better graphics/materials etc. That is what worries me.

No, the chassis is not new from scratch. It is said to be based on the current/previous one and strechend for more rear legg room. Now we can just wait for press release.
Maserati will never say how much "hardware" comes from Chrysler. But once revealed I'll check both the Lancia and the Maserati out.
To all those who thinks the new car is some cheap design rip off, what is Maserati suppose to do when other companies use the Quattroporte as their inspiration to design their cars? When it is time for Maserati to launch the replacement, people are accusing them for copying from those who copied Maserati in the first place?
The Maserati however is a mid-engined car, like the Ferrari F12, with transaxle gearbox and rear-wheel drive.
Huh?
With all these LED technology I'll love to see some tail lights inspired by the 3200 GT:

Does the new one still have the transmission in the rear like the outgoing QP?
