2018 Maserati GranTurismo Coupe and Convertible - First Drive Review

It's still a beautiful car, just outdated.

You can pick one of these up in S form, either a clean Coupé or Cabrio with low miles for $45-60K; over $100k less than MSRP. This facelift doesn't offer much in the way of changes anyways..

I remember back in the day when the last Quattroporte was first introduced and the 400hp from the 4.2L V8 was an almost unbelievable figure. It was the same output as the 360 Modena and more than the V12s from BMW and MB, and about 100hp more power than the V8s on the market. Man have times changed.

Sad to see it finally go. Now that Maserati inherited Alfa’s sports cars hopefully we’ll see some fine machinery show up soon.

I didn't know won't have a replacement, what is Maserati without a coupe like that?

Alfa Romeo's cancelled 8c will show up as a Maserati and the GT is supposed to be replaced by an EV by 2022. We'll see if this actually happens though as FCA isn't exactly known for sticking to production plans.

Maserati's Next GranTurismo Will Be Electric

Maserati will make it and the GranCabrio its first electric vehicles and has started testing the electric powertrain for them.

  • Maserati has announced that it has started testing its all-electric powertrain at its facility in Modena, Italy.
  • The all-electric powertrain will debut on the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio sports cars.
  • Expect the new sports cars to make their debut in May 2020. The video (above) shows the letters MMXXI, which is 2021 in Roman numerals.
Maserati has hinted at its electric future for some time now. It has been talking about a new subbrand called Blue that could support fully electric versions of the rumored Alfieri sports car, Quattroporte sedan, and Levante SUV. However, now the Italian automaker is getting more specific, announcing that it has started testing its first all-electric powertrain to be introduced in the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio sports cars.

It hasn't released specifications for this electric powertrain yet, though we expect it to help propel the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio much quicker than its internal-combustion-engined predecessor, which launched to 60 mph in the mid-four-second range. The electric vehicles' sound is also being developed at the facility in Modena, Italy.

The GranTurismo was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva auto show and was produced until November 2019. Maserati also recently announced that a new two-seat sports car is coming, which we originally thought would be the highly anticipated Alfieri that was revealed in 2014, but now we're skeptical of this because of the mid-engine mule we recently saw. We could also see a hybrid version of the Ghibli sedan and a second SUV beneath the Levante in the near future, too.

And, at a recent drive event in Colorado, Maserati representatives repeatedly mentioned a big product announcement coming in May 2020 but wouldn’t provide any additional details. Could a new model riding on this EV platform be what they were referring to?

I'm eagerly awaiting this presentation and am very curious to see how Maserati embraces the BEV age. I wonder whether its' BEV platform is an in-house design or whether it has been sourced from an outside supplier.

It's gotta be their own? Maybe some old Ferrari + Alfa part sharing?

I'm not sure whether FCA can provide a larger car BEV platform in relatively short notice (2021). They have developed one for small cars, but otherwise ? Bosch/Benteler, Tesla, Rivian, Rimac, VAG or others could be possible suppliers, I imagine.

Tesla is a for sure no. Also remember this car is going to be a modular platform that can accomodate mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. This has been in the works for some time. They first announced this platform capability in 2018 and were working on it before then, so 2021 isn't insane to me. They'll certainly be working with some type of supplier (i.e. ZF) but even bigger brands like Mercedes do that.
