Some of the younger folk might not remember the E-type. I do and had the pleasure and displeasure of owning a 1970 vert. It was the best and worst car I ever owned. When it was running, it was exceptional fun. It was also the most unreliable car I ever owned, leaking parctically every known fluid to mankind. Drop-dead gorgeous though, especially for that time.

If Jaguar had deep pockets and healthy financial statements, they should have adapted those small coachbuilders like Eagle and others .. mass-produce their work and make it affordable. Those cars are timeless.

Singer is a similar case for Porsche lovers, Mechatronic for Mercedes. And I am sure everyday there is someone new coming to this new Restomod era. Restomod is going to hunt unique car collectors, it will flourish mark my words. Anyone can grab a brand new Ferrari, Lambo or whatever. But those restomods, are the customer's own signature. Quite unique.

That render looks great, but in the real car,as i see from the spy photos, the side windows will be higher, and that's a bad thing. I want them to look just as small as in the new s coupe, or the cls.

Might not have a V6? :)

GTSpirit:

The upcoming 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will come with a AMG V8. Despite rumors of the introduction of a V6 in the upcoming AMG GT AMG will stay loyal to the V8 and that’s good news for the AMG and V8 fans alike. AMG is working on a more efficient version of its popular V8 engine that might celebrate its debut in the Mercedes AMG GT.

When we asked Tobias Moers during our recent interview about the chances of a V6 making its way in the AMG models soon he replied “There is still a lot of potential to make the V8 more efficient” and “There won’t be a V6 version of the AMG GT”.

That's because the AMG GT goes on general sale in 2015, just 12-18 months before the expected arrival of the new family of inline-six engines. Why put the V6 in the AMG GT in its second model year, when it will be replaced within a year or so.

AMG might not even bother with a six-cylinder version anyway, if the initial V8 sells out for years ahead - which it is 90% certain to do at this point.

The new 4-litre V8 AMG GT will be very economical for its class - my guess around 180g/km CO2 NEDC. A 3-litre six-cylinder, even a new I-6, may not be that much more economical.

Probably in some FL model (S or C would be my guess). I doubt MB will put them straight away in the new E W213.

Yes they haven't traditionally launched a new model with new engines. But the next E is unbelievably important to them, so I would highly doubt they would let it soldier on with engines that will be old hat in a matter of months.

I will be waiting for that car. If they hit it out the part like the S and C, that will be for me.

It seems to me with every generation supercar made by Mercedes they make a smaller and cheaper version. it went from the ever you exclusive SLR to the sporty SLS and now the small baby sport GT-AMG, though i hope they change their minds and let the SLS stick around at least 3 more years alongside the GT becuase the SLS has been one of my favorites.

Sorry to say this but the SLS production will end this May, because the production capacities are needed for the C190. Even if the SLS sales went up surprisingly, this decision couldn't be changed.

Nevertheless, AMG confirmed there will be a true successor of the SLS. But Ola Källenius (former CEO of AMG) also pointed out that they will pause one or two generation before launching it.

But the SLC will out-perform the SLS in almost every way so there is no point to keep the SLS in production.

I thank Mercedes for that, because now a Mercedes sports car is closer my cost tolerance than a SLS would have ever been. That said, I have a feeling we are about to be disappointed in terms of how "inexpensive" the GT will be. I doubt we would get much change from $150k, if any.

Viper-like in the side profile.

I don't get what the deal is with the two different exhaust tips. Could AMG be readying two trims at once, one regular and one higher performance? Seems to make no sense for its dedicated lines; it is a different matter with the regular and S-models of standard Mercedes.

I am 100% sure this car will come in different power stages in analogy to 911. One will definitely be the S-model while I also expect further models to rival the 911 GT2, GT3, Turbo... The different tail pipes should help to tell them apart.

The whole point of the E-type was an extraordinarily long bonnet, due mainly to the engine being behind the front axle - like the SLS/GT - being light weight, relatively affordable to the common man, and devastatingly good-looking, somewhat a byproduct of efforts to make it aerodynamic.

The F-type achieves none of the E-type's essence, except for 'its breathtaking, sensational, stunning gorgeousness' - according to the thousands of people employed by JLR marketing to infest car web site comment boards.

The AMG GT appears to fulfill the light weight, high power to weight, efficient aero, and relative affordability thing - for the performance on offer. All that remains is whether it is a proper looker.

While a retro designed F-Type paying hommage to the E-Type would have been mouth watering, it would quite have become a fad(e.g PT Cruiser, Ford Thunderbrid). The F-Type is a modern day F-Type, and is designed for today's customers, and not Gatsby of 1970.

Likewise the SLS AMG is not a retro version of the Classic Gullwing but is instead, a progressive iteration.

Both Mercedes and Jaguar are on the same path, which is to branch out to a younger and more dynamic audience and the best way of successfully doing so it by giving a past a subtle nod but bringing the future forward. I think that both the SLC and F-Type will do so in similar ways - by being modern day hotrods.

^ that's poppycock, Centurion. Firstly, the E-type came out in 1961, so where this 'not Gatsby of 1970' comes from, I don't know.

Secondly, the original E-type was meant to be as cutting-edge as possible, even incorporating aero and construction lessons from Britain's then still vibrant aircraft industry. The current F-type is nothing but a cynical sham, as a supposed heir to the E-type, as it sits on a chopped XK platform, from 2005, which itself is from the 2002 XJ. There is nothing cutting-edge about the F-type, and is cynical insult to the great E-type and its creators. The sheer fact that it weighs over 4,000 pounds, makes a mockery of the out-and-out sports car E-type inheritance.

The AMG GT is by comparison a thoroughly modern sports car. Brand new engine, pretty much brand new chassis and targeted openly at the current champion, the 911, in attempt to match if not beat it, whereas the cynical F-type is at best a GT cum Brit muscle car, like the powerful but lairy AC Cobra. The two cars - the AMG and the Jaguar - are as different as can be. 12 months from now, the tale of the tape - the sold-out status of the AMG versus the huge discounts on the F-type - will be clear to all.
