GT [Spy shots] 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT Spied

The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door sports cars produced by Mercedes-AMG. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG (competing in a different segment), it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG.

No, kudos to Mercedes for maintaining an actual 2 door, 2 seater supercar in their lineup for already multiple continuous generations. Maybe the price for that is models like the C43 had to switch to a 4-banger, etc., in order for the brand to meet the increasingly stringent, fine-related, emission standards. It's just a pity the hood seems shorter and the proportions aren't as crazy this time around, but the dying breed front-mounted V8 supercar brief alone will make the purchase worth it.

It will be smoking hot from every angle - to an extent that will make interior quality issues forgivable.

What quality issues do you speak of Luw?

My obersvations from the SL63 put it clearly above the 911 I'm terms of finish. It's no S coupe for sure, but neither is it meant to be. My gripes with the SL quality were limited to the steering wheel hub cap finished in plastic as opposed to leather, resolved by a simple parts swap, and the gloss black trim which was completely out of place in a sports car of this calibre. In all other respects the SL was equal too or better than the 911 in terms of finish and on par in terms of build with an unmistakable Mercedes bent on design and aesthetic.

I am personally tired of the 911 being green carded in areas it is clearly lacking, simply based on the pedigree of its sportiness and allure of its badge, when there are quality aspects which are well below par. The door handles for example are no better than a GLA and belong on a Matel toy.

The Mercedes driver tech and infotainment UI make it a better daily prospect than the 911. The ride was extremely well judged and the handling, while ultimately not as pin sharp as a 911, is all 95% of customers would want or need. The drama of a V8 also means it delivers thrills on more occasions in daily commute than the 911 could hope to achieve.

Aspects such as the integration of driver aid technology, the quality of the sound system, the ease of use of the navigation, the functionality of the HUD etc. put it above a 911 for day to day usability.

Simply put the SL is a better daily prospect whereas the 911 is the better ultimate sports car, if you are going to go out of your way to seek roads that bring out it'best.

The GT will turn the sportiness of the SL up a few notches. What remains to be seen is the compliance of the ride during normal day to day driving. Will it be too firm, or will the added rigidity of the coupe provide greater scope for the engineers to tune an acceptable ride outcome without any trade off to the handling balance.

Sorry an additional quality issue I did note was the plastic of the seat base. Very cheap and thin.

I just saw an SL with this smoked metal looking trim on the console and door handle. Much more in keeping with the SL, but ultimately I think I would opt for carbon fibre.

Agree on the free pass porsche constantly get.

Their 991.1 GT3 engine is flawed, guys out there on their 4th engine, 992 GT3’s are also blowing up already, and as for fhe real racing pedigree porsche are getting their ass kicked by ferrari, mercedes, toyota, and audi in GT3 class and the higher new WEC top divisions.

And the new gt3 RS isnt that quick away from the Nurburgring compared to is competitors when on the same tyres.

2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe First Details: Larger, Heavier, 2+2 Seating, AWD

It debuts in September.

Mercedes unveiled the SL back in October 2021 and yet we still must wait a bit more for its coupe sibling. In the meantime, AMG has shared preliminary details about the second-generation, two-door GT in an interview with Autocar. As expected, the Porsche 911 rival will be going through some massive changes since the new sports car is going to be bigger and heavier by accommodating a 2+2 cabin layout and an all-wheel-drive system.

Sharing the Modular Sport Architecture platform with the SL, the new AMG GT Coupe will unsurprisingly be stiffer than the roadster after adding a fixed metal roof. It'll also receive bespoke tuning for the double-wishbone front suspension and the multi-link rear. It's getting the same nine-speed automatic transmission as the convertible, along with a fully variable AWD and manual shifting.

According to AMG CEO Michael Schiebe, the upcoming is just as focused as the outgoing model while being more spacious and easier to live with thanks to the increased dimensions. He went on to say it's still a "supercar with an ability to excite and engage the driver on a very high level" while providing "greater comfort and ease of use." If you're wondering about the interior, yes, it'll be essentially carried over from the SL.

The initial versions will be offered strictly with a V8 engine developed to meet Euro 7 regulations, so look for GT 55 and GT 63 models to echo the top-tier SLs. However, Schiebe suggested electrified derivatives are in the pipeline but won't be available at first. Instead, AMG will wait until emissions regulations get stricter. Spy shots have shown prototypes being tested with a plug-in hybrid by featuring a charging port on the rear bumper, so we know a PHEV is planned.

It's unclear at this point whether AMG will dare to put a four-cylinder engine in the new GT to echo the SL43. The base variant of the roadster has the same M139l with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger as seen in the new C63 and GLC 63 S E Performance models. In the entry-level Sport Leicht, it's good for 381 horsepower (284 kilowatts) at 6,750 rpm and 354 pound-feet (480 Newton-meters) starting at 3,250 rpm. The rear-wheel-drive SL43 is technically a mild-hybrid since it has a starter-generator setup offering a temporary boost of 14 hp (10 kW).

Following a less-than-ideal preview at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the new AMG GT Coupe will break cover in September. It means we're likely going to see it at IAA Munich and/or the Detroit Auto Show scheduled to take place later the same month. Earlier this month, Mercedes revealed the car behind closed doors during the AMG GT Live Sneak Preview event at home in Affalterbach at which participants had to pay €450 to check out the new sports car."

If they do it, honestly Mercedes Benz are losing the car game, their EV's are ugly, C63 weight almost as S63E and top of the line AMG product gets a 4 cyl in base trim from only 150k, I need to puke.

My base GT has 3.8 0-100, V8 with 630Nm/476PS and 1.6 ton, all this for a starting price if I remember correctly 116k EUR.

I haven't heard about 992 engine problems. What's the issue?
