GT [Spy shots] Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190)

The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door sports cars produced by Mercedes-AMG. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG (competing in a different segment), it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG.

^ that's poppycock, Centurion. Firstly, the E-type came out in 1961, so where this 'not Gatsby of 1970' comes from, I don't know.

Secondly, the original E-type was meant to be as cutting-edge as possible, even incorporating aero and construction lessons from Britain's then still vibrant aircraft industry. The current F-type is nothing but a cynical sham, as a supposed heir to the E-type, as it sits on a chopped XK platform, from 2005, which itself is from the 2002 XJ. There is nothing cutting-edge about the F-type, and is cynical insult to the great E-type and its creators. The sheer fact that it weighs over 4,000 pounds, makes a mockery of the out-and-out sports car E-type inheritance.

The AMG GT is by comparison a thoroughly modern sports car. Brand new engine, pretty much brand new chassis and targeted openly at the current champion, the 911, in attempt to match if not beat it, whereas the cynical F-type is at best a GT cum Brit muscle car, like the powerful but lairy AC Cobra. The two cars - the AMG and the Jaguar - are as different as can be. 12 months from now, the tale of the tape - the sold-out status of the AMG versus the huge discounts on the F-type - will be clear to all.

Agreed. Jaguars of yester-years (before Ford Purchase) were cars of great beauty and good mechanical engineering except the quality glitches of electrical concerns I think. F type is just a mockery of the beautiful E type and both should not be spoken in one sentence imo. But I also feel the same way between the legendary SL gullwing and the ordinary looking SLS AMG and I have seen the SLS AMG in real life. SL gullwing tubular structure was quite revolutionary while the SLS AMG doesn't offer any thing of that inventive spirit. Putting two gullwing doors does not make the SLS any better than what F type is to the E type for Jaguar. As far as AMG GT is concern I will hold my opinion until I see the real car but claiming it to be the most beautiful Merc ever is ............ Ah! I am speechless.:arghh:

I DONT KNOW WHATS ALL THE HYPE OF THE F TYPE ALLEGED BEAUTY. Its an attractive car from the rear but quite generic up front. The XJS was a true successor to the E type in terms of sheer beauty and even the XK8 was a better looking car than the F type. But beauty is subjective and therefore I should put IMO.

With a gestation period that started more than two years ago, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (C190) is arguably the most expected sportscar wearing the three-pointed star since the SLS AMG was unveiled back in 2009.

So far, all that is was known for sure about the model was its choice of powerplant, the fact that it will also sport an aluminium spaceframe body and the fact that it was designed to go up against mainly the Porsche 911.

Well, we recently had a chat with one of our Stuttgart insiders and he exclusively gave us a rather interesting bit of information: the AMG GT (C190) will not try to steal sales from the Porsche 911, because it is actually based on the Porsche 911 (991)!

To be more specific, the Porsche 911 platform has been turned backwards, with the engine mounts being pushed inside the wheelbase for a better weight distribution, which in turn gave the AMG GT that long hood, while also taking the rear seats out of the equation.

Remember the pack of pre-production AMG GT models getting benchmarked against a Porsche 911 Turbo S from a few weeks ago? Well, the fact that the cars are related is one of the reasons for them doing winter testing together.

This is also precisely why yesterday we spotted an AMG GT (C190) prototype making rounds of the Nurburgring Nordschleife while sporting a Porsche license plate.

For purists, one of the downsides of using a Porsche 911 platform fitted backwards will probably relate to the fact that the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will be... gasp!... front-wheel drive in the base version, while the transmission will have only one forward gear and no less than seven reverse gears.

The seemingly unbelievable pieces of information above were given to us by a very reliable source, a man who is highly known as a consultant to both companies involved – as they are both Stuttgart-based - and some of you might have heard of him already: his surname is Dr. Ing. Zuerstapril.

Sorry, but I find it very hard to believe that this car is based on the "Porsche 991 platform turned backwards" and will be front wheel drive.

^And I think we have our first April 1st victim :D.

Expectations are sky high:nailbiting:

Expectations should be high. If you're going to call a car a 911 fighter, you better be at the top of your game!

I believe it has been an incredible tactical error to call this a 911 fighter. The 911 is close to perfection after decades of refinement. While the SLC will undoubtedly be a compelling package, I think it will come off second best in most comparisons.

Couldn't of said it better myself. The weight of the 911 alone gives it a huge advantage, but the story doesn't end there. The 3.6 or 3.8L flat 6 will also make a difference. I'm very interested to see what this car is going to be like, and how that boosted turbo 8 does.

Even the z28 was faster than the 911turbo s at the track, so be sure, this car will own the 911

Speed isn't the issue. The SLS Black will be faster then a 911 Turbo. The 911 is essentially, perfect in every single way you can imagine now. Porsche has kept on improving the same recipe over and over and over again. Road feel, balance, braking, steering, communication, dynamics, it's simply bang on in every single category. Will the GT come close? I'm pretty darn sure it will, but to call it a 911 fighter is a big mistake. The GT is going to have huge amounts of torque, and that's going to lead to oversteer in corners. Is that a bad thing? Of course not! That's part of the AMG DNA! I'd be sad if it didn't! AMG reminds me of Lambo before they got neutered by Audi. The point of a Lambo is to scare you silly, and AMG's kinda do the same.

I have no doubt in my mind this car is going to be fantastic, but a 911 fighter? I'm skeptical. We'll have to wait and see. Look no further then the 991 GT3 to see how good the 911 can be.
