Golf [Official] Volkswagen Golf VII

That is new to me: Because something is very popular and sells in high volumes, it automatically becomes the superior product? Don't compare a Golf to a 911 or an S Class. Even if it now is the 7th generation, it is just a Golf, a car to transport you from A to B. It has never been anything more. The GTI was just sportier, but never a sportscar/enthusiasts car. I have never been interested in a Golf. It does nothing for me. Scirocco is another thing, but it looks like it gets suppressed, not 4Motion, no facelift, probably no next generation.

As i said before, it's like iPod, every one can have it, there are a lot of similar products, more expensive with more functions, but it's unique in it's simplicity and functionality, so is the Golf. Sorry for my comparsions again:D

And the question is does its steering wheel adjustment work as good as one in i30? :D

Thank you for reading my mind. Great comment.
I think the general opinion is that all Audi's of the same bodystyle are very very similar, e.g. Sportbacks, saloons, SUV's so that when one gently evolves, it still looks close to indistinquishable to its predecessor and siblings, whereas the Golf has always had the same, attractive look , and if it dramatically changed it would be poorly received. The Golf is a rare case where one model sticks to the same design template, one of the only comparisons being the 911. The Golf is one design that does not move forward, in Audis case its a whole brand

Looking at VW firining on nearly ever cylinder it is a wonder BMW and Mercedes haven't tried to cooperate more. They're going to need some type of miracle to keep from being run over by the VAG Monster.

The Golf's recepy was simple: A car that can suit everyone.

Yet, creating a car that could target almost any group was not easy. It would have to be designed according to the average driver/customer, but that would still leave a huge customer base out. So it had to be everything and nothing. It sounds complex? It's even more hard to achieve. Yet Volkswagen did it, and it still does for generations!

So, what are the key ingridients of Golf's success?

1. Design: The design has to be simple. Easy to the eye. 100% politically correct, with hints of elegance and sportyness. An easy-to-the-eye design with very few details can be easily percieved as either sporty or classy, depending on who's looking. Nothing extravagant, no experiements, no new ideas. That way, noone can blame it for looking ugly. It may be bland for some, though.

2. Equipment: The Golf always offered what the era demanded. Be it radio, A/C, power steering, and now a variety of electronic nannies and infotainment systems. It was never left back. Even the most demanding customer could be satisfied with a well equipped Golf.

3. Engines: Even in this department, there was a wide variety of choises. Be it gas or diesel, there were always many affordable and economical engines, as well as the top-of-the-line GTI for the petrolheads. Everyone can find what he asks for!

4. Price: Basic versions are priced just a bit more than their affordable competition, the french, italian, and japanese hatchbacks. Premium versions would go higher, depending on engine and equipment level. No matter how much money you want to spend, you can still get a Golf!

5. Feeling: Above all, it's a safe car. Nowhere near as exciting to drive as a BMW Z3, still not as hostile to the driver as a W210 E-Class. It already was soft enough to be comfortable and sharp enough to hint of sportiness. Yet, with a bias towards softness, the car's road behaviour and handling were always to the safe side. What the average customer wants. And then was the GTI with a bit different setup, for those that wanted something more.

So, a car that can do that much, will sell that much. It's not a miracle, just the right recepy. Of course the Golf isn't for everyone. There are still people who want more attention, more comfort, more sharpness. But for most, the Golf is the best solution.

Yes, bland is definitely the word than comes to my mind. I still love the interior though.

Hmmm, I wouldn't call it bland. It's a well executed design, probably the best looking A3 ever. And still if it were bland, bland is better than ugly ;)

I absolutely ADORE the way the new 1er drives, but I just can't get over that front. M pack doesn't help a bit.

To me, Golf (GTI) is my 911.... (sorry!) (y)
I have so much more history / feelings and love for the Golf than the Porscha.
Also maybe I am wrong and that your "signature" is ment to be ironic but what it actually does say is what
makes the Golf such a good product for all kinds of people all around the world!

"The car you drive to work is a champion" -
(many people drive their Golf / Golf GTI to work every single day and are very very happy)

As a vw-sales person I know I can sell Golf to a 18 year old male and to a 90 year old female.
The Golf is "the most perfect" car for a very large group of people.
You can also get almost all kinds of engines, TSI / TDI, 4motion, DSG, lots and lots of equipment and so on...
which makes it a superior product for people. Still we deliver cars as the GTD GTI and R.
and Variant / Stationwagen and Cabrio and Plus ... The Golf is because of this and a very good price indeed one
of the best cars in the world. Personally I have driven alot of cars and still I come back to my GTI 2006 as one
of the best cars to own!

EDIT:
I can see that we are having a discussion about the Golf design....
The answer is really simple and it will acutally be a question that all of you need
to ask your self and then look at the amazing looking car and know why it look
the way it does... (personally I do not know any car in the world that does that...
Not even a Lambo)

"What car in this world could suit both a manager and truckdriver and be taken picture
of outside a castle or outside YOUR own house as and still perfectly fit inn" ;)

As per Giannis, Sunny and Da Silva it's truth beyond reasonable doubt that the Golf was, is and always will be iconic. The latter status is well earned and deserved form day one and Golf I;)

For me GOLF means less Korean-Auto:jimlad: products sold, more German Iconic products on the road that is factually better in all ways from engineering, design, chassis, drive train, engines, technologies and kit.....hooray!!!! This is GCF as in GERMAN car forum isn't it!?:)
