I think the general opinion is that all Audi's of the same bodystyle are very very similar, e.g. Sportbacks, saloons, SUV's so that when one gently evolves, it still looks close to indistinquishable to its predecessor and siblings, whereas the Golf has always had the same, attractive look , and if it dramatically changed it would be poorly received. The Golf is a rare case where one model sticks to the same design template, one of the only comparisons being the 911. The Golf is one design that does not move forward, in Audis case its a whole brand
Though the R32 and R do try to impress, and they manage to do it, I don't think the Golf has ever been attractive. It just has been in the middle, not ugly, but not specially beautiful, just normal.
To me, Golf (GTI) is my 911.... (sorry!)
I have so much more history / feelings and love for the Golf than the Porscha.
Also maybe I am wrong and that your "signature" is ment to be ironic but what it actually does say is what
makes the Golf such a good product for all kinds of people all around the world!
"The car you drive to work is a champion" -
(many people drive their Golf / Golf GTI to work every single day and are very very happy)
My signature is not ironic. It refers to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. It could suit the M3 or the 911, but not the Golf, because it has never been a car used in racing, I not talking about sales race.
As a vw-sales person I know I can sell Golf to a 18 year old male and to a 90 year old female.
The Golf is "the most perfect" car for a very large group of people.
You can also get almost all kinds of engines, TSI / TDI, 4motion, DSG, lots and lots of equipment and so on...
which makes it a superior product for people. Still we deliver cars as the GTD GTI and R.
and Variant / Stationwagen and Cabrio and Plus ... The Golf is because of this and a very good price indeed one
of the best cars in the world. Personally I have driven alot of cars and still I come back to my GTI 2006 as one
of the best cars to own!
EDIT:
I can see that we are having a discussion about the Golf design....
The answer is really simple and it will acutally be a question that all of you need
to ask your self and then look at the amazing looking car and know why it look
the way it does... (personally I do not know any car in the world that does that...
Not even a Lambo)
"What car in this world could suit both a manager and truckdriver and be taken picture
of outside a castle or outside YOUR own house as and still perfectly fit inn"
I can't disagree. The Golf can be driven by anyone, whatever age, whatever social class etc... But does that give a car soul? I don't think, and that is probably why I have no feeling for this car, other than the fact it is very popular. Last time I went to the VW dealer, I did not look at the Golf. It did nothing for me. I was looking at purchasing the the Polo (3 door) instead of a Clio RS III, but there was no Polo GTI yet, so I was looking at the Scirocco 2.0 FSI. The Golf never came into my mind.
I find it quite ironical, in a world where every person want to be better and distinguish from the others, but having such furniture, such cloths, such jewelry, such watches, etc... everybody want to the drive the same car. Because everybody has got an iPhone? But that is also the best phone. Is the Golf the best car? For whom? Maybe only for the average, but not for the car enthusiast. I am definitely not an average person, at least in taste. I'm ready to drive on daily basis a stripped down race car. So as said, the Golf does not respond to any of my demands so I don't see myself owning this car anytime. I can't drive a car everybody drives, especially when IMO it is not even the best, for my needs. But between a Seat Toledo, Peugeot 308, Citroen C4, Renault Mégane, Ford Focus, Opel Astra, Fiat Bravo, Lancia Delta, Honda Civic, Toyota Auris, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cee'd, yes I'd pick a Golf.
To me, if you are a German car aficionado, the most natural progression of ownership is a Golf, a M3, a 911 and a S class. There are some other very awesome German cars, bit nothing personifies German cars as these four.
Though I don't like the Golf, not that I hate it, you are right.
Golf ---> M3 ---> 911 ---> S Class
And yes M3 is my next wish, but I skipped the Golf, better to say have an alternative to the Golf. And I don't care if that is "the car to have to be like all".
