VW Golf 1.5 eTSI, VW ID.3 Pro 59 kWh: Buyer's Guide
Petrol or battery – which compact Volkswagen rocks?

The ID.3 wants to be the electric "Volkswagen". A comparison with the previous bestseller VW Golf fits perfectly. Is there a changing of the guard?

From the ID.3's point of view, this juxtaposition is a very nasty duel. How can you compare the Golf, a bestseller, a compact king for 50 years, the true all-rounder, THE Volkswagen?

We think: just like the ID.3 does "in everyday life". Very calmly, without rioting, with balanced skills and a rather universal attitude. So: VW ID.3 Pro 59 kWh and 1.5 eTSI in comparison according to ability and mileage costs.VW Golf.

The lower depreciation clearly speaks in favor of the Golf

With the latter, we have clearly calculated: A Golf is worth it. Even with a 150 hp petrol engine under the bonnet, it drives – in the long run – cheaper than the compact electric model of the ID family. It is only about 500 euros cheaper when you buy it, you have to pay taxes annually, and the fuel costs don't speak for it either.

The TSI ultimately gets this out of the better insurance classification and the much lower depreciation. According to our calculations, an ID.3 "loses" a painful 3000 euros more over a four-year holding period – so much money cannot be brought in even with cheap (domestic) electricity tariffs.
There is more harmony in the electric car
On the other hand, the electric VW drives more elegantly than the Golf. It rolls more smoothly, springs basically identically comfortably, steers very smoothly and comes across as extremely harmonious when driving. Strong: The car has rear-wheel drive, convinces with secure traction and at the same time undisturbed steering feel.

The battery packs in the floor of the car hardly restrict functionality (trunk slightly larger than in the Golf, payload slightly lower), but function like thick insulation – much less chassis and tire noise penetrates the interior. The Golf can also be quiet when driving moderately, but the 1.5 growls a typically rough four-cylinder song under load and revs. Trost: But such a turbocharged gasoline engine never gets annoyingly loud.

The ID.3 sprints faster than the Golf, moves more effortlessly, especially from a standstill – but the throttling to 160 km/h subjectively acts as a stumbling block. Here, the Golf has the reserves that are more suitable for motorways, running at speeds of up to 230 km/h with a tailwind.

At the same time, we feel a little better off here, even more supported by the seats and, above all, more sensitively integrated into the car thanks to the low seating position. In the ID.3, you always sit a little on top, more relaxed. In addition, there are significantly more body movements on poor road surfaces, resulting in a more unsteady driving experience.

The operation is distracting for both candidates. The interior of the ID. The large head-up display and the small attached extra display for the driver alone convey the more up-to-date status.

Attention: The adjustable digital-analogue clocks of the Golf are easier to read, but at the same time we find the operating concept via real buttons in the steering wheel spokes – instead of haptically half-baked sliders as in the ID – more pleasant. The following applies to both: You have to familiarize yourself with controlling the functions via the large central screen, the system is clearly distracting.

The Golf is definitely fun to drive. Another important argument in favor of the Golf: It is simply fun to take the compact car along country roads. Its engine can be driven at low speed without grumbling about it, it can also rev, and it masters the balanced middle.

Overall, the car looks pleasantly rich, precise, mechanical and authentic. The whole thing over 860 kilometers per tank of fuel. Even the best electric model does not have much to oppose here.

Result

A VW ID.3 can do a lot, is comfortable and produces only low operating costs. However, a Golf can also do that. The bottom line is that a 1.5 eTSI is even cheaper and more functional, and also offers a usable towing capacity.
