Golf [Official] 2015 Volkswagen Golf R Variant officially unveiled

Volkswagen has presented the Golf R Variant ahead of the full official premiere of the model during the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Basically an estate version of the Golf R, the vehicle sports “a winning combination of practicality and performance”. This is the first time in history when the flagship Golf model will be produced as a station wagon model.

Visually the Golf R Variant differs from other Golf wagon models in a number of areas. At the rear, for example, it has a new R design bumper, a high-gloss black diffuser, four chrome exhaust tips and LED taillights and license plate lighting. At the front there are also a new R design bumper with large air intakes, a distinctive radiator grille with R logo and Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated daytime running lights.

Inside the cabin, the Golf R Variant is equipped with sport seats with a fabric and Alcantara mix with decorative stitching in crystal gray and an R logo on the seat backrest. Other interior features include blue ambient lighting, automatic air conditioning and an infotainment system with display on the center console. As an option, Volkswagen also offers a Nappa Carbon leather package that includes different leather combinations for certain surfaces.

Power is provided by a 2.0-liter TSI petrol unit with 300 PS (221 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft), identical to the one in the Golf R hatch. This unit is mated to a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission that is combined with a 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Thanks to this setup, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint takes only 5.1 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The sporty wagon consumes 7.0 liters per 100 km (40.4 mpg) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) with CO2 emissions of 163 g/km.

The Golf R Variant has also been equipped with all the other mechanical features of the standard Golf R. These include the ESC Sport stability control system and the Driving Profile Selector that comes with Eco, Normal, Individual and Race modes.

Sales in Europe are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2015, with first deliveries in the summer.
