C4 [Official] 2014 Citroën C4 Cactus Revealed + Opinion Poll

The Citroën C4 is a car produced by Citroën, part of Stellantis. It was positioned to be the successor to the Citroën Xsara. The first generation production started in September 2004. For its first two generations, the C4 was a compact car/small family car, but it has been redesigned as a subcompact crossover SUV for its third generation. In June 2020, the third-generation C4 was released in the form of coupe SUV, abandoning the traditional C-segment hatchback/saloon body style.
This car wasn't on my radar until i read a jalopnik article about how light it is. Just based on weight savings alone i appplaud it. It is also quite attractive. Looking forward to hearing more. Will have to enjoy it from a distance, as I'm in the USA though, pity.

Verdict
4/5
The Citroen C4 Cactus 2014 is lower than a C3 hatch and has no four-wheel drive option, so isn’t so much an SUV as a new take on the modern family car. The radical interior is simple and soothing, while the exterior design is rugged and chic at the same time. The weight saving measures require a few compromises, while the diesel engine and gearbox could be more refined, but Citroen has broken the mould to create a comfortable, fashionable and affordable small car - a return to what it’s good at.

Top Gear's take on it:
Well, it's unashamedly non-sporting and comfort-biased. An immense amount of thought-power has gone into making it a car to relax and soothe you. The result of that objective could have been a car for people who don't like cars. Luckily the opposite has happened.

If the new Citroen C4 Cactus doesn’t sell by the boatload, I’ll eat my hat. The newest member of the French maker’s line-up is one of the quirkiest, funkiest and most interesting new cars to go on sale in 2014, yet doesn’t cost a million pounds.

I absolutely love what I'm reading.... a proper Citröen: comfortable, spacious and completely different to the norm.

Citroen Tries to Explain what it Did with C4 Cactus in Funny Ad

In order to provoke a kind-of “I see what you did there” reaction from those who lay eyes on the C4 Cactus for the first time, Citroen has created this amusing ad to put it in context.
Since the Cactus is such a weird and unusual looking car, it may be misinterpreted and harshly judged by those with rigid beliefs about how and what a normal horseless carriage should be like nowadays.

The ad is just as weird as the car, making no sense whatsoever at the start and then slowly starting to come together as information builds. It’s the kind of spot that would make you consider buying a car, instead of those stereotype-inducing take-smiling-family-from-A-to-B kind of promos…

What Citroen has managed to do is create a front-wheel drive crossover that looks bigger than its supermini platform would ever have you believe, it looks… distinctive and you never have to worry about parking lot dings on the doors ever again.

Cool ad, cool car!

Citroen C4 Cactus UK Pricing and Specifications

After Citroen revealed it in production guise earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the funky C4 Cactus is finally available for order in Great Britain. The French manufacturer announced that the base model starts from £12,990 OTR and deliveries begin in October.

Those £12,990 will buy you the Puretech 75 manual with the Touch trim level, while the top-of-the-range e-HDi 91 ETG6 specified in the posh Flair trim will set you back £18,190. In total, there are three trim levels (Touch, Feel and Flair) and five engines in the lineup.

So what do you get for the least amount of money? Well, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes as standard along with steering wheel controls for the radio. Power front windows, an USB slot and a gear change indicator for economic driving are also included. LED daytime running lights, central locking and the innovative "Airbump" panels complete the highlight features. Touch models cannot be optioned with an automatic gearbox, while powerplant choices vary between the entry-level 74 hp petrol to a range-topping 99 hp diesel.

For £14,590 you can get the 81 hp petrol-powered Feel model that adds body color side mirrors, gloss black roof bars and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, bench-style front seats and air con are also on the menu. If you need a tad more comfort and fuel economy, you can step up to the e-HDi diesel coupled to an auto box for £16,790.

The pick of the bunch is the £15,990 Citroen C4 Cactus Flair model. For that kind of dough you get the 81 hp petrol mill, sat-nav, an upgraded stereo, rearview backup camera and automatic wipers and lights. Further more, ambient LED interior lighting comes as standard, together with a front armrest that doubles as a storage compartment for all your different bits and bobs.

Like we previously mentioned, the range-topping variant commands £18,190 and comes with a 1.6-liter e-HDi oil burner coupled to an automatic gearbox. Compared to traditional units, this transmission works by pushing three buttons on the center stack labeled D, R and N. Even though it looks chunky, the Citroen C4 Cactus weighs just 965 kilograms in base form, which is 60 kilos lighter than the Ford Fiesta supermini.

The local car dealerships introduced a bunch of new models this weekend and we decided to go take a look (my wife and daughter enjoy it, too). One of the dealerships we went to sells quite a few different brands, including Citroën. They had the C4 Cactus there, too. It was drawing quite a crowd, but mostly of a very specific demographic... that is, men aged 70+. I doubt that was what Citroën had in mind.

Citroen Reveals C4 Cactus Airflow 2L Concept

Unveiled ahead of the Paris Motor Show, the C4 Cactus Airflow 2L is a small package of French design and technology built to drastically reduce consumption. Using clever aerodynamics and a new type of powertrain, this small crossover now consumes under 2L/100 km (117.6mpg US and 141.2mpg UK).

C4 Cactus Airflow 2L follows yesterday's reveal of the Renault 1-liter concept. It's clear that both companies came up with solutions similar to the Volkswagen XL1, though the two French models are drastically different to each other. While the diamond brand went for an all-new platform that used magnesium and aluminum to shave 400 kg, Citroen wants to show its fans what it can do with current tech.

Thankfully, the C4 Cactus was already a very light car, tipping the scales at under a ton, but engineers were able to shave another 100 kilograms. Perhaps more interesting is what they've done with the design. Both the front lower bumper and the wheels have active aero elements that help reduce drag and look cool when activated.

And how's this for an idea? Instead of a regular set of side view mirrors, you get cameras that point backwards, reducing drag. Thanks to these measures, air flows over the C4 Cactus 20% more efficiently. Lower rolling resistance tires which are tall and narrow also help with fuel consumption.

Citroen is relying on an all-new type of hybrid system to power the concept car. Instead of regular electricity, "Hybrid Air" combines a VTi petrol engine with an air compressor/pump. The French company is very serious about putting such ideas into practice. Hybrid Air is deemed to be an important step towards putting the 2l/100 km car on the road by 2020.

Daily production to grow by 20 percent
Citroën will be increasing production as a method to keep up with a high demand for the C4 Cactus crossover.

Despite featuring a very controversial styling, Citroën seems to have a real winner with the C4 Cactus as production at the Villaverde factory near Madrid, Spain will be boosted in the near future to meet an increasing demand for the funky compact crossover. Daily production will increase by 20 percent in the near future as the model is penetrating all major European markets.

Spanish media is reporting employees will have to come to work on four Saturdays in November to assemble the C4 Cactus, a model which is based on a stretched platform of the C3 and weighs 200 kg (441 lbs) less than the C4. One of the main reasons why it's so successful has to do with its low starting price of only €13,950 at home in France.

According to industry analysts, Citroën will sell between 50,000 and 100,000 units of the C4 Cactus each year.

I had a feeling this car will be popular as it is so different and very funky, Citroen made a brilliant decision and read the market well when it brought this car out. I like this brand for me it is more interesting than Renault and Peugeot they always innovative and different with the outside and inside styling of their cars and introduce some strange quirky features with each model. This one for instance has these door bubbles and straps on the dash.

Aircross concept to receive production version
Citroën CEO Linda Jackson has disclosed plans to increase production capacity of the C4 Cactus.

The company took a major gamble with the funky-looking Cactus because many industry experts said it would fail due to its quirky design, but it seems Citroën has won the bet as production will increase by 10,000 units a year at the Villaverde factory near Madrid to match the strong demand. They hoped to sell 70,000 units in the model's first year on the market, but their expectations were surpassed by a strong customer request racking up 74,000 orders since June last year.

Citroën's initial plan was to sell the C4 Cactus only in Europe, but since the model is so successful, the company has decided to bring it to Australia, South Africa and possibly in Southeast Asia as well. The C4 Cactus is already the brand's third best seller after the C3 supermini and the C4 Picasso MPV.

Linda Jackson also said the C4 Cactus will inspire future models, including a production version of the recently unveiled Aircross concept which will be out in the "near future."
