As great as the Golf is, it still is a Golf. It wont have the same class as the Audi, and especially the "cling" when you say "VW Golf" or "Audi A3"

I fully understand what you mean here...... well that is until you say Golf GTI, then the reverse is true.

You buy a A3 because of the design, brand or you simple like Audi. You dont get A3 because its a better car than the Golf.

It's not a bad thing to want a car because of its status. Even I would prefer an A3 over a Golf if it was meant to be my only car. I do care about image, status, brand name and stuff like that. I also expect from my car to fulfill my needs. But I wouldn't buy any of them if I was after a car to enjoy taking corners with it.

Because I think the standard Golf should have the same suspension set-up as the GTI.
