Phaeton [Spyshots] 2017 VW Phaeton - Spy Pics & Info

An overpriced station wagon would be a disaster. 4-8 years ago the Pheaton was waiting to be laid in a coffin and be put to rest but today Chinese and Asian markets demand different cars from us in the western world and the next Pheaton could very well be made in china, strictly for China.

If they keep the price sensible (i.e. 25% below that of a similarly engined and spec'ed Audi A8) then I can see it becoming a minor success.

Al-bodied, huh? While I am rather fond of this rendering, how will they differentiate this from the next A8? What would make me want to get this over an A8, and vice-versa?

Agreed, that was the first question that went through my mind. We'll see when they come out.

Perhaps the upcoming successor to the current D4 Audi A8 will be an automobile distinctively different than the series II Phaeton. As things seem to have gone a bit quiet with regard to the rumored Audi A9, Audi may choose to to vastly differentiate future SWB and LWB A8 models. The SWB models being very sporting and coupe-like (sort of a M-B CLS + type of automobile) while the LWB models will be representative and oppulently appointed, preferably chauffeur-driven, limousines. The series II Phaeton may be shoehorned somewhere in between.

The question remains is wheather Pheaton/Continental/A8 will keep FWD platform or will they get Porsche sourced RWD platform?

The successor to the Bentley Continental GT/Flying Spur will almost certainly have the VW-Groups' MSB underpinnings (new RWD/4WD matrix designed and developed under Porsches' supervison). Wolfgang Dürrheimer alluded to this in several interviews.MSB will be the basis for all future Bentley sedans and GT coupes-as well as for all future Panamera + variants and the sub-Panamera "Pajun" series of cars. Whether MSB will be the basis for the A8 or Phaeton successors remains questionable. The new MLB Evo matrix designed and developed by Audi is as highly versatile as the new MQB "Golf/A3/Leon/Octavia".

Do we know whether decision has been made by VW already whether a RWD or FWD architecture will be adopted for new A8/Pheaton? Or is there still internal discussion in VW about this matter which could further delay the car's market introduction?

VW Phaeton to offer plug-in hybrid, diesel powertrains when it returns in a few years

Volkswagen of America honcho Michael Hornhas already promised to bring the slow-selling but excellent Phaeton back to the United States in 2018 or 2019. Beyond the confirmation of the nameplate, though, there's really very little in the way of concrete data on what the next generation of VW's range-topping sedan will look like, be powered by or cost.

According to Automotive News, we have at least partial potential answers to all three of those questions. The digital publication is reporting that we'll see both plug-in hybrid and diesel powertrain options when the Phaeton returns to the US market, though it's not clear what the base engine option will be for cars carrying a rumored starting price of around $70,000. If AN's sources are accurate, the V8 TDI will put out some 450 horsepower to go along with what we'd assume are bucketfulls of torque, while the hybrid V6 would offer up more than 400 ponies.

Further, AN tells us that the Phaeton will be based on VW Group's MLB Evo architecture, which would have it sharing underpinnings with Audi's range of sedans and crossovers, including the top-of-the-line A8. We asked VW of America if it could confirm or deny any of these rumors, and the answer was, rather predictably, a negative. "At this stage, they are just rumors," says VW representative Mark Gilles.

It remains to be seen how American buyers react to such premium pricing this second time around, having mostly avoided the Phaeton the first time it was offered Stateside, due, at least in part, to the perception gap of a car wearing the VW badge costing as much as what are seen as more premium nameplates, such as VW's own Audi.

I have seen a few of the current Phaeton here in Middle East and it's styling has aged well, still looking like a pimped up Passat but I certainly like it for what it is. I believe their interiors are built like a bank vault. I would be happy to see a new versions that hopefully will be a much better bet than the current one to be a worthy rival for the 7 series and S-class for much less money

According to more recent reports in the automotive press, VW officials have confirmed that the Phaeton II is "a fully developed and finished product". Apparently, its' late presentation is a result of "marketing considerations"-foremostly, continued robust sales of the current model in China (the cars' most important market). The series II car will almost certainly be based on the MLBevo matrix, but otherwise "differing substantially" from the next-gen Audi A8. Tentative EU presentation of the car should be towards the end of 2015 as a MY 2016 offering.

Good idea! Now we can keep all info in one convenient place.
Only problem with new VAG cars is that they tend to show up out of thin air, with very little info, pics and hype before. Not much fun for forum geeks like us.

This new car is going to be good either way; it's being made by the second largest car company in the world and they know how to make cars on every level.
