Phaeton [Spyshots] 2017 VW Phaeton - Spy Pics & Info

I personally hate such large luxioury hatches like the Panamera, A7, Galibier, up coming Phaeton and DS9. I can't understand what is people dislike about sedans traditional shape.

Because cars don't all have to look like they were drawn by a 4 year old. Why conform to shapes that were set 50 or seo years ago and didn't change until just ten years ago. Cars as statement objects as much as they fulfill functional needs. They are no different from watches which we like in other appearances than round case with Arabic numerals and a leather strap. Why not a rubber strap paired with a carbon fibre face and a hexagonal case?

Actually, the monovolume, round ass design of a Galibier, Panamera and the like is even older than the 3 volume shape of your average sedan/saloon design, so I miss the point.

I don't think today's designers (the most part, I can't generalize) are inovative at all, instead rather chavy with their designs.

The most underrated luxury car ever.... hope it's replacement gets more success.

That is why I am always enticed by getting one, second hand are really cheap and you have "all" the luxury of an S Class. The best thing is that it is so rare, that even being underrated it stands out.

A masterpiece of engineering and Piech's final 'hoera', indeed underrated and the factory where they build these cars is phenomenal!

Put all the world's luxury and amenities you want inside the Phaeton. But as long as the badge on the front and back of the car is mostly associated with the Golf and Beetle, unfortunately the Phaeton just won't receive the credit it is due. Besides, it'll always carry the stigma of 'wish I was an Audi A8'.

Great car it may well be, but as we kind of learned with Maybach, the brand is more important than the product itself.

When I seriously looked at both of them, they had almost the same price. If you were able to buy the Phaeton, be it the W12, you would also be able to buy the A8, W12 if you wish.

Similarly I was pleasantly surprised when my shuttle from Wolfsburg to Hanover a couple of weeks back turned out to be a chauffer driven Phaeton instead of the usual Multivan. Amazing ride quality... and fab individual, electric seats. That thing was amazing. Whisper quiet, my ride ended in the blink of the eye. I developed a deep, new found respect for the phaeton.

I think VW is in a much better position today than when it first launched the Phaeton, to launch a luxury saloon. It is today at the forefront of mass-produced, mass consumption high-technology cars and it is a much better known brand (well, at least in Asia anyway). Let's hope people will bite on this car this time.

Looks better than Audi A8. Phaeton is the cheapest used car you can get. I like the new VW/Audi line that runs around the front wheel arc, through the skirt to a huger rear wheel arc. Looks simple but good, like Apple.

I was wondering what had happened to the next gen-Phaeton concept originally intended for the IAA and then for Beijing. But VW insiders @ Beijing let slip that Piech and all are waiting for the W222 S-Klasse to progress the concept.
Which seems about right. S-Klasse is an event , Phaeton is a table in the foyer.

But given the undeniable hatred Piech has to Mercedes-Benz in particular , Mercedes'es quest to enter traditional VW markets which led to the Phaeton in the first place (to teach Mercedes a lesson) which did not go as planned.
It will be interesting to see what the A-Klasse, now in a more Golf challenging outfit stacks up against the Golf.
VW execs including Piech and the CEO spent about an hour at the A-Klasse @ the launch in Geneva.
A Golf is a Golf and eventually becomes part of the background.
The question is will the A-Klasse penetrate the Golf's traditional market?
And even more so than expected?

The Golf is the only car the instantly pops into your head when you think hatchback, all others are copies including the A3, 1er and A-class and this is the exact same when with the S-class, all others are copies. So I don't think VW will worry too much about the A-class and nor will Mercedes worry about any future Phaeton...... regardless of how good it might end up being.

I still think this could work in the U.S. if priced right. I'm thinking they should follow the Hyundai example, price it like a V8 5-Series/E-Class, but be S-Class sized. VW can't fight the S/7/LS at the same price, and they must realize that such a car priced right still won't ever reach sales parity with the S-Class or 7-Series. The VW badge just can't do that so they need to decide what volume makes sense/is sustainable.
