Yes they obviously look different, IMO the BMW looks better in that shot above, but this category of vehicle, this general shape, in most peoples heads now is BMW's. And without a doubt Mercedes is going to be accused of copying the X6 and if it doesn't go that far, then at least accused of making a vehicle that looks like an X6. Exactly like what happened with VW and their CC coupe, which came across as a CLS knockoff.

That's a great example of one brand innovating and another following suit with their interpretation of alternative styling. The GLE is exactly that, an X6 with different style. Both have the same shape e.g a big mid sections and a tall tear with a short boot lid. Mercedes are not doing anything unsavory here. I believe there are technical and aesthetic challenge to designing a practical and physically attractive SUV in any different way. However the styling will give customers enough to think about as the BMW is more dynamic while the Merc is more smooth in its surfaces.
