I can barely follow that Wolfe, are they saying the GLE will have the new 4L AMG V8? Any indication on when it will be shown?

^ Tried to fix some more google translated stuff above. Yes, the author alludes to the fact the new 4 liter AMG Biturbo V8 may propel the GLE Coupe eventually. Might be a while, though, as no timeline was given. :)
 
I just hope the U.S. market gets the right models, GLE400, GLE550 and GLE63 AMG, with the non AMG cars having the 9G transmission.

It is time to do away with the 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 and 7G.

Jeeeez, this german brands are becomming so boring and cost saving. EXACTLY the same front end and same interior than the facefilfted ML.

Really really underwhelmed by this car.

The X6 might give this vehicle a hard time, especially with it`s interior.

Time will tell if Mercedes has stepped on it`s toes with the dated bits in a brand new vehicle.
 
But the ML and this car are basically the same car in 'sedan' and 'coupe' form. Like the X5/6. The C and S on the other hand are completely different models yet they look identical.

Well they have to start somewhere, and the previous X6 was a brand new model/niche, but the interior was a straight copy from the X5, they only added kneepads. It did very well.
 
The more 'spy' pictures I see of this car, the more it worries me. The overall proportions looks too bloated, with a very up-right profile almost akin to a C300 riding on a lift kit. The carryover switch gear on the interior is also a big red flag.

I knew Mercedes wasn't going to just throw out the whole interior. They would have to do the same the GLS also. Now next generation should be something and I expect the GLE to be different from the GLS. Give them some time to sort it out. I'm sure the SUVs will get a stunning re-do like the C and S have. That said, can we get a GLS 600 Maybach with 630hp please?

You're confused. I didn't say anything about an AMG Maybach, I said a GLS 600 Maybach, not an AMG model.

Ah does this interview not dismiss SUVs also? There is a German one that did and I was looking for the English equivalent for the non-German speaking.
 
Please find an English version appended below. Suspect MB may first wish to confirm the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is successful, before expanding to further models, like a GLS. Not sure a sportier GLE Coupe is a good fit for Mercedes-Maybach, though, as it might be more suitable for Mercedes-AMG, perhaps. A Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 with 630 hp instead of the usual 530 hp might be badged "S", and would typically launch a few years later, similar to the 57 S, 62 S or Zeppelin following the 57 and 62. :)


“I would not call it an active plan yet,” said Dr Hermann-Joseph Storp, the development director for the S-class, at the Los Angeles motor show. “Because we have to first wait to see how successful the new saloon will be. But if the brand is popular, we could of course make a Maybach version of many different cars.”

Storp went on to say Maybach versions of the E-class and GLS-classwould be possible, as well as a Maybach-branded version of the existing S-class coupé.

“Maybach is about quality, refinement, comfort and exclusivity – as long as a car has these characteristics, it could be a Maybach,” he said.

The expansion of the Maybach brand would fit very clearly into the company's new naming strategy. With Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG models being available across a vast range of product from the A-class to the S-class, it would be inconsistent for the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand to continue to apply to just one car.

Storp said it would take up to two years to adapt an existing product to meet Maybach standards although it would take half that time to put a new engine in the Maybach which is available in Europe with only V8 and V12 petrol power, raising the prospect of a diesel Maybach going sale in Europe within the year.
