Don't forget, there was never ML. It was always M Class. Letter 'L' is used solely as a designation on a car itself, and to avoid confusion (and possible legal consequences) with BMW's M letter.
IMO, Audi has solved its designations the best of the three. Although BMW did make it easier since adding even numbers (2, 4, 6, possibly 8), the other two numbers are still adding confusion (328i, 330d, 335d) to an average person.
MB is in a deep s***, especially if they want to make 2 door CLS, 4 door S Class Coupe, or some variation of existing models :S.
Letter F is reserved for F(uture) Concepts (most recently F800, F125), I doubt we will see that designation in use for cars that will be sold on a market.
