Apparently, next C Coupe will be know as - you've guessed it - CLK.

I love Mercedes, and I could always distinguish their monikers, but for f#ckS sake, can't they be consistent for once?!?!?!

And why will they retire the CL and call it S Coupe, when they will bring back CLK instead of C Coupe? What's more, the E Coupe will probably be know as CLE.

All this info is from no one other than Georg Kacher.

Mercedes does is worst with naming. I wish I could propose them a nomenclature, that would make sense. It is easy to find a coherent nomenclature, but it is so difficult to implement with the different life-cycles of the products.

I somehow don't believe this report.

i'm s little late to the thread but the interior is too close to the CLA/A/B class to be the real deal, if it is though it goes against to what they previously stated about making the C class more upscale apart from the CLA since its moving into the US market.

besides i doubt as expensive as the C class is 40k+ they would make the interior feel and look as barren as it its

Its going to be the same as the S-Class, side creases, rear and front it appears. Should be a looker if they don't muck it up on the sides too badly. Now that interior, oh my.....

Thanks !

This is the report. Georg Kacher is rarely wrong, and especially read about the new straight six engines coming to replace the V6 :

Regarding that interior debate, I must say that I feel that MB is preparing an incredible interior for this C class. Something tells me that this car will be hot-both exterior and interior. I think that after they raised the bar so high with the S class and won our respect so bad, they will try to make us as happy as possible with each car launched, especially with the regular sedans C, E and S. I feel that this is the reason why interior is so rarely caught in spyshots, because MB is trying to hide its beauty as much as they can until the revealing, to surprise us with it. Remember those old first pics of the W222 interior ? Almost everybody was fearing for it, everybody blame the designers and hated so much things in it. They hated the screens, the 2 spoke steering wheel, the 4 rounded air vents, the old HVAC buttons. See, 4 things already, it makes you think what remains in the interior that you can name it as good looking ! But, after the revealing everybody is ecstatic about it. I-for example, I adore it, every single thing about it, I f....ng love it. For me, it is number one interior in the world, simply the best. I have this feeling about it, in January we'll see if I was right or not, but mark my words. I think the C will be the best in its class.

I hope for their sake that the interior is not only appealing in its presentation but made with quality material. Hopefully, the folks in M-B learned their lesson from W204 pre-FL C.

Yes, the interior materials will be better, the only problem is the display screen. If it is similar to the CLA, then it will destroy the interior setup. I hope it will be a pleasant surprise for all of us. By the way, it will be a $50K , well equipped , out of the door priced car.

hope they are doing the same for the next e. w213. If they do so, mercedes will reclaim the crown from bmw

i have a strong feeling that is not the same interior we're going to see next year, it woudn't be like Mercedes to introduce such a bland copy/paste entry level interior on a car thats moving more upscale, especially when you look at the new Lexus IS and series interior it shows that that isnt the official interior it just cannot possibly be

W222 went from this

Very informative.

It would only make sense to rename the C-coupe CLK if the E-coupe becomes the CLE. But then why continue to go down the path of renaming the CL to the S-coupe?

It also sounds like he has seen the car and is impressed with the interior. Like they have with the S-class Mercedes needs to update the Command interface on the rest of the range and also finally add touch pad functionality.

CLK only makes "historic" sense. But since they've killed it for this generation, why would they return to it? Would CLC (current abomination that's going to be killed anyway) not make more sense if you're going to name the E-class based one CLE? Of course, the current CL would then be logically named CLS, which is already taken :)

Or they could go with something like this
CLK (coupe leicht kompact) - C class coupe
CLM (coupe leicht medium) - E class coupe
CL (coupe leicht) - S class coupe

If Merc is consistent in naming the coupes as C-coupe, E-coupe and S-coupe, then the CLA would have been the A-coupe.

It is not.

I could only think it as this :

Merc will re-rename their coupes into :

CLA
CLC
CLE
CLS

...and CL. There has been no official announcement that the CL would be renamed the S-coupe, so Merc still has time.

IF, and IF Merc decides to call it the S-coupe, then because the S is considered a special class not following the nomenclature and will comprise of multiple models (SWB and LWD saloon, Pullman 600, cabriolet, 2-door coupe and probably 4-door coupe)

But if Merc calls it CL, I doubt there will be a 4-door coupe version of the S. Unless they name it CLX or CLZ.

Confused much ?

If Merc is consistent in naming the coupes as C-coupe, E-coupe and S-coupe, then the CLA would have been the A-coupe.
But it's not a "real" coupe, it's a "4 door coupe", like the CLS. So I'm not sure you can follow that logic.

If Merc is consistent in naming the coupes as C-coupe, E-coupe and S-
Merc will re-rename their coupes into :

CLA
CLC
CLE
CLS

...and CL. There has been no official announcement that the CL would be renamed the S-coupe, so Merc still has time.

Let's forget about the problem whereby this proposed nomenclature you'd have no way of knowing whether that denotes an "4 door coupe" or a "normal" coupe, the pattern of CLA (A), CLC (C), CLE (E) would have you assume that the CLS is a coupe (normal or 4 door) of the S class. Which it is not. In fact, the E-class would be the only one which would have an offspring in both 4 door and 2 door coupes, each with it's own name. That still makes it confusing. :)

According to the report, Merc will use this strategy :

CLK will undercut the 4er/A5, but above 2er

CLE will be below 6er but above 4er

CL is above 6er as it has always been.

8er is VAPORWARE LOL

Mercedes has made a total mess with naming. Before the were "letter" Class, CL(K), SL(K) and ML. Instead of calling the small SUV MLK they called it GLK because of the GL. Then they called the 4 door E-coupé CLS, what to say the truth causes confusion if to take the CLA as basis. To restructure the nomenclature some namings might die, like ML, SLK and change status as CLS for instance. And who knows how it could affect the product. What if CLS will be called CLE and S Class 4 door coupé CLS? Will clients avoid the CLS because they think will be seen as previous CLS from a status perspective?

My proposal to naming and portfolio this time (as times have changed) would be:

F Class = 3/5 door city car (like Audi A1, Mini and BMW "0" Series) (F for "Flitzer", sounds like F*** Class? Maybe then the letters M(Mini/Mirco) or K(Klein))
G Class = (famous Geländewagen, don't know if they stop production one day, if yes, see "GLS")
A Class = 5/(3 if ever) doors compact hatch
B Class = 5 door compact van
C Class = sedan, sedan long (if China needs wagon, Coupé, Cabrio (between 2 Series and 4 Series, closer to later)
D Class = 5 door wagon (BMW GT style, yeah I hate it, but that is what people want. At least the name is there).
E Class = sedan, sedan long, wagon, Coupé, Cabrio (between 4 Series and 6 Series, time to have a true 6 Series rival)
R Class = 5 door sports van (well like current one, I really like this idea, it is in fact a sort of 5 GT rival)
S Class = sedan, sedan long, sedan xtra long, Coupé, Cabrio

CLA = four door "coupé"
CLC = four door "coupé" (if Merc wants to join the 4er GC, at least the they have the name, and current CLC will die)
CLE = four door "coupé", shooting-brake, (changes name, not sure if it will affect sales)
CLS = four door "coupé" (should then be the 4 door S-Coupé, hopefully "old" badge will not affect sales)

GLA = compact SUV
GLC = mid-SUV (really stupid they called the the other one GLK, just because of nomore existing CLK and the SLK)
GLE = SUV (will it be acceptable to change from ML to GLE after the third generation?)
GLS = luxury SUV (will have to find the right balance between luxury and utility)

MLA (rival of X2 if needed) (not sure if the namings sound dumb, but for sake of consitency...)
MLC (rival of X4 if needed)
MLE (rival of X6)
MLS (rival of X8) (the name if there, just wait for the market)

SLA = Roadster (soft top?), Coupé (who knows, maybe there will be a market for this, at least the name is there)
SLC = Roadster (hardtop) (new name, will be hard to digest after three generations, but for the sake of consitencey again)
SLE = (name is there, car is not, just forget)
SLS = Roadster (SLS will stop production, new SL gets new name. Acceptable after so many generations?)
SLR = Coupé (the rumored 911 / Turbo fighter, gotta bring back the old badge, "r" stand good for such a model)

And there we are I think. Problems are ML, SL, SLK and SLS. Well it could be kept like "x"LA, "x"LK and "x"L, but who knows what will Mercedes need in future. The more models, the more hard it will be to restructure in future.
