The R232 having been maneuvered into a market position in closer proximity to the 992s', perhaps ? The new SLs' predecessors, as of the W113 "Pagoda" omwards, were decidedly more cruisers than sportscars per se. The R232 appears to be a good deal more "athletic". And it was developed under the stewardship of AMG. The 992s' street cred" has been cultivated over the past 58 years, beginning with the 901 series 356 replacement.
The SL and open top 911 have competed for some of the same buyers and have been compared (at least in this country) for years. I don't see any difference now other than the SL becoming somewhat sportier. 911 Cabrio, 8-Series Cabrio, Lexus LC, SL, Jaguar F Type, upcoming Maser Cabrio, all these GT like or leaning cars are more or less competing for the same buyers. These market segments aren't rigidly defined and restricted like a lot here want to believe.
