I guess SL cannot get away from that looong overhang if you want to have some design balance. The front overhang is longer than the rear.

Again, the same old mistake: headlights similar in shape to that of entry level models. The overall body shape looks very similar to that of AMG GT. I wouldn't be surprised to be largely the same, just tweaked a bit. Mercedes seems very "lazy" and uninspired these days.

We've known this isn't a warmed over existing AMG GT (which is a warmed over SLS) for years now. This car is on a completely different platform and doesn't have a transaxle, which should be your biggest clue its not just "tweaked a bit".

Will it be a new platform or a shortened version of the AMG GT 4 door?

Why now when both cars have been around forever?

The R232 having been maneuvered into a market position in closer proximity to the 992s', perhaps ? The new SLs' predecessors, as of the W113 "Pagoda" omwards, were decidedly more cruisers than sportscars per se. The R232 appears to be a good deal more "athletic". And it was developed under the stewardship of AMG. The 992s' street cred" has been cultivated over the past 58 years, beginning with the 901 series 356 replacement.

I doubt it. Do you have some manufacturers info or this is your own opinion?

Mercedes announced the MSA flexible platform for sportscars back in 2016. At that point it was for SL and SLC. The SLC got cancelled and the platform development was handed to AMG right around the time AMG was getting approval for projects that weren't shared with mainstream MB. This SL and the next-gen AMG GT are the result.

The AMG GT 4 door is adapted from the wagon version of the existing MRA platform. That is not in use for these sports cars and MRA is being phased out in favor of MRA II that underpins the new S-class and C-class.

Yeah I gotta see it naked and lots of pics of it. In some pics/videos it looked perfect, but then it doesn't. Even C&D says the rear deck looks like it's too high, like some say about the 911 Cabrio. I hope the wait won't be long now.

I do wonder if the rear deck is high to make room for the battery that's part of the AMG hybrid system. I already contacted my dealer to get an early build 63e. Hopefully it looks good overall so I won't have to cancel. I'm hoping this will be my last ICE vehicle. I try not to have more than 1 car from any given brand but I'll make an exception for this.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL will be delivered at the beginning of 2022
Selected customers were allowed to take a close look at it under the highest security precautions in Pebble Beach in August.
Mercedes has now published the interior and is now showing some teasers of the new Mercedes SL without camouflage. The SL (R232) is only provided with a light foil.

The SL will first appear with the V8 BiTurbo with around 639 hp. This variant will later also be available as a 63 SE Performance. It was presented at the IAA in the AMG GT 4-door with 843 hp. There will also be a variant with an M139 2.0 liter 4-cylinder.

Yup, I was surprised when C&D even mentioned it as a possibility. It's not my job to be that plugged in, and even I knew that.

These journalists seem to be getting conflicting info. I do wonder if the AMG team confirmed the 6 cylinder to them and I've been left out of the loop. Roadshow mentioned the same thing: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-mercedes-amg-sl-sl63-prototype-first-ride-review/?PostType=multi-image&ServiceType=twitter&TheTime=2021-09-21T18:16:00&UniqueID=F9AC4784-1B07-11EC-9F8E-1D9596E8478F&ftag=COS-05-10aaa0b

"The base SL will be the SL53, which will use AMG's turbocharged inline-six hybrid motor, and there should be a high-powered plug-in-hybrid model sharing the GT63 E Performance's powertrain."

Also interesting:

"Stockmeier says the team looked to the original 300SL for inspiration, and the R232 will definitely be a lot more fun to drive than previous SLs. But AMG doesn't want the new SL to alienate existing customers by being too racy -- in fact, Stockmeier thinks it could be the next car for those that bought the now-dead S-Class convertible. "Of course we know the heritage of the car and we know the customers of the current one, and they shall be lucky when they buy the new one as well," he says. "90% of the customers will never go to the track, and they want to have a comfy car as well, and that's what we need to provide. These are very valuable customers and we want to have them with us." It will also attract enthusiasts that want a performance car, though, and therein lies the new SL's real appeal."

Interesting.

Not that I could afford one, but when I read that bit in C&D, I was pleasantly surprised that there was a strong possibility there'd be a new SL with the inline-six despite numerous prior reports saying otherwise. Hi-po drop-tops where you are white-knuckling the steering wheel no longer have that much appeal to me. No, I'd want something that is effortlessly quick and smooth that you could drive along a sun-drenched coast with firm yet compliant ride, preferably with a rich Italian countess that looks like Monica Bellucci in the passenger seat.
