CLS [Official] Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake (X218)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
The designers have thought about that, if you look at the chrome strip on the concept version, it doesn't span the entire width of the boot lid and it tapers nicely towards the tip. Not sure why this design wasn't carried to the production version. It is also worth noting that the corner of the rear quarter window is sharper on the concept car

Mercedes has released details about the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake on the firm’s German website and it’s set to get a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, which produces 517bhp or 549bhp with the AMG performance pack.

With all that power hooked up to a seven-speed AMG MCT gearbox, the AMG Shooting Brake will be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds – about the same as a Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Thanks to the efficient twin-turbo engine and a standard stop-start system, Mercedes claims the AMG will be capable of 28.1mpg and emits 235g/km of CO2.

The newcomer will go on sale early next year and should command a premium of a few thousands pounds over the £81,180 CLS 63 AMG coupe.

^^^ Agreed, I always felt it didn't have to stretch the width of the tailgate/trunk, they should just make it long enough to cover the license plate area.

My guess is, in making the car production ready, the material above the strip and below are different materials. Just a guess. Would be surprised if the upper part is a metal, and the lower composite. (plastic)

Athestically, I think the descending line is great. It is the lower ascending line that conflicts in my eye. If I put my hand just above the rocker panel, blocking out the lower line, it looks great.. If anyone can photoshop a car without the lower ascending line that runs along just above the rocker panel. i think if the car were smooth from the descending line to the rocker panel it would work much better.

It looks waaaay better than the regular CLS, to me.

The original CLS had a very flowing, "one volume" look to it, which somehow the SB manages to get, at least, at some extent. The regular CLS does had the spot-on proportions, but those stupid side lines and detailing make it look more 3 volume sedan and less copue than the first gen CLS and to my eyes, to this SB.

Regards!

Completely agreed. Original CLS was one-volume indeed. New one is broken apart.

It's remarkable how cohesive the dropping line looks on a Wagon back with a sloping long back window.... finally I can find a form that actually coincides with the motion of the dropping line on a CLS, and my eyes are soothed more-so. The CLS Sedan, doesn't have anything on it that coincides with the dropping line, rendering the line much more of an eye-sore than it is here.

In fact I think the side line is whay ruins the sedan's look. If you look at a black silhouette of the current CLS, you will still see lots of "'one volume" in its architecture and proportions, however, add the dropping and ponton lines and then is completely corrupted. The ponton works great on the E klasse b/c it's a proper, boxy, nuclear bunker 3 vol sedan but the CLS is supposed to be a young sexy lady... the result is a travesty IMO.

100% agreed.

Sorry guys. Not my cop of tea. The normal CLS is a beautiful car. But this? Hell no. Just like the A7, a HORRIBLE looking rear.

If the 5GT (which I actually like) was a disappointment to most, this CLS SB is a fail, sorry!

No Tumbo, IMO the A7 actually has very good balance in profile and from the rear, stunning Audi!

Waiting for the car to be seen on the road in real life, before I comment.
By the way, I don't get the comparison to the Audi A7. The A7 is a hatchback.....!

Sorry to disappoint, but the CLS SB also looks like a hatch or IMO more like a hearse then. Yet as always IRL will give better perspective for good or bad.

Not disappointed at all, Human ;). It could really be a hearse, but then only to transport the just shot deer.

I really hope I'm understanding this correctly and the Drive Kit Plus can be fitted at the dealership. If so MB has taken a giant leap over the competition with in vehicle connectivity.
