CLS [Official] Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake (X218)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
If the 5GT (which I actually like) was a disappointment to most, this CLS SB is a fail, sorry!

No Tumbo, IMO the A7 actually has very good balance in profile and from the rear, stunning Audi!

fabolous, this could be a transporters dream, it looks very nice anyways, the overall flow looks superb, say hello to the most beautiful estate (aka shooting break), neat idea for merc to reinvent this type of car for a niche market, should attract crouds.

Not my cup of tea but not a bad looker for a Wagon (I'm not a Wagon fan, though think the S212 is one of the first Wagon's that actually entices my senses). I just am not convinced that the utility of a Wagon on such a poorly functional design in terms of room-to-size ratio (CLS Sedan) is meaningful enough for its very existence.

It would absolutely bomb in the States (is it coming to the States?) where if people want Utility, they get the highest riding thing that meets their efficiency needs that they can afford. American's (I should say "We Americans", since this is one area where I ride with the herd) seem to want nothing to do with "interesting takes on Wagons".

I also think it looks awesome. But something makes me think, if BMW rivals it with the 6 Series GranCoupé Shooting, the BMW will be even better looking.

By the way, why are there three different thread about the CLS Shooting Brake ?

Because it's 3x awesome! :P

Am I right in saying this will be a five seater? I actually prefer it to the coupe/saloon.

Looks like it? ;)

Inside, the CLS Shooting Brake’s foldable rear seats include room for a fifth passenger.

Thanks for the pics Wolfgang

The dropping side line makes much more sense here in the SB with the long, smooth slopping roof than on the regular CLS.

I was highly skeptical with the concept and mules photos, but at this point, is easily my fav new Merc since SLS/E klasse. I'm completely loving it.

Good point there, my tasteful friend. The dropping line IS far less offensive here. You pointed it out rightly, it's the loooong slope of the rear upper greenhouse that does it. The dropping line looks like it's in a fist fight with the rest of the CLS Sedans design.

For comparisons sake, the E63 wagon has a very different personality and both have their merits. I'd probably go for the E63 wagon and the CLS63 sedan though ;)

That's just frakking epic. Love it. The rear somehow manages to show how the Panamera went wrong with the CLS pulling off the Shooting Brake concept with aplomb. Better than the coupé for me - no question.

LOL at the "fist fight"

Mercedes has to refine the chrome accent on the boot/tailgate lift on both CLS. It looks so unfinished.

^^^ Agreed, I always felt it didn't have to stretch the width of the tailgate/trunk, they should just make it long enough to cover the license plate area.

AGREED. The worst is those marketing morons who KEEP SHOWING THE CHROME STRIP UP CLOSE, as if we're supposed to be impressed by how crude, unfinished, rough, and unrefined that chrome strip just jams to the ends of the trunk? It's one of the crudest implementations of chrome on the rear of a car that I've found. I can forgive the CLS's truck-like flat front end because it looks so beautiful when you stand back and look at it (especially from a distance), but the dropping line which one designer seemingly with all the power forced them to use maybe because it was his idea, not taking into consideration how it looks like it was meant for another car entirely, and the very crude and unfinished-look of the chrome strip are my only two beefs with the CLS design.

Good to know I wasn't the only one disliking it :P
As Phybenz says, it's too wide and then, the it finish so abrupt at ends that it looks like a last minute adition.

Regards!

Indeed. The example on the E-Class is far more refined. They at least should have smoothed down the sides.... take some sandpaper to that b*tch or something! They just go full speed and jam into the ends, not aligning with anything at all. I just don't get who's overlooking coherency at M-B these days. They have sheetmetal stamping down, they have lean and precise textures, dramatic forms, shapes and details chalk full of multi forms of character.... yet, is anyone in charge of actually making sure that everything flows and coherently joins to ensure an intelligible language?
