CLS Official: Mercedes CLS Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Not it is not "just me". CLS is my least favorite MB, even below R class. It is okay with the AMG package, but with out it is veritable banana on wheels.

Funny - and for me this was always the best looking shape;) I guess it is targeted to a tad different audience than the rest of the range...

Though I must confess that it took me some time to get around the shape, one of those that "grows on you".

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Why do these press pics (wallpapers?) have the old MB logo and text. What happened to the new one thats appeared on the SLK press material? :t-crazy2: POOR attention to detail from the marketing department thats for sure.

I'm disappointed they were unable to incorporate the S-Class, C-class type of Command.

Other then that...its all good! :usa7uh: Pictures NEVER do the CLS justice. In the metal the car is just gorgeous.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

I still prefer the original 3 bar front grill and the original steering wheel design. The tail lights and wheels are just what the CLS needs to refresh the car.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Very surprised they didn't change the lower part of the front bumper more. I thought that was the weakest part of the design.

I like the detailing of the front bumper personally. Although, I was hoping that they would lower the front end lip at least to line up with the side skirt and to not curve it up in the front; if you know what I mean. I think that would give the CLS even more presence.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

I think Just_Me is a secret admirer of the CLS... he just won't admit. ;)

Nah, Im a secret admirer of the C63 but CLS just doesnt do anything for me. I dont like it. I guess CLS is one of those cars you either hate or love.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

So this the SL FL will be shown at Geneva I guess and for us the New York Auto Show.

Probably due to CORE. Mercedes!

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Way to expensive. The whole electronic architecture of the vehicle would have had to be re-engineered, too much $$ for a facelift. I'm just glad they did something to it at all. They haven't always updated nav systems in previous facelifts on certain models.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Excuse my ignorance but what is CORE. ???

Car looks great. The black interior is perfect

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

CORE is the name of a cost-cutting + quality increasing program at Mercedes, that Dr. Z. created when he took the head of Mercedes.

It has ended now, and allowed MB to spare enormous amounts of money in the manufacturing process, while buying better quality materials at lower prices.

Thanks to God this CORE increased the quality, it was not only to cut the cost!

I don't think it is CORE and its new manufacturing processes that are responsible for the non-Comand Controller in the CLS. Such a big modification has never been done for a FL in a MB, you would have to change and test the whole electronics again. A FL never contains such modifications; some deeper FL can contain drivetrain mods alongside with the usual wheels/bumpers/lights/colour/motor output changes, but changing the whole electronic structure of the car is just impossible. I don't even think the center console is big enough for the Controller cables.

I however read that the ML/R/GL have been developped with controller in mind, so it can be seen iin the ML facelift, but it is only a rumour.

My question is: given that the CLS is an E-Class, will the E-Class benefit from the new telematic system used in the CLS?

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

CORE is a huge cost cutting/efficiency plan initiated some years ago under a long forgotten boss.

The E's got its mid life fl already so didnt it get it? If it didn't then i doubt it will as it's entering its 'rundown' faze. Maybe for some final production model? Can't see too much happening to the current E right now tbh

Wasn't it Zetsche? I thought so...It was Cordes (who made the giant E/CLS/SL recall) then, right?

@ justanthony, the E FL has not this new Comand, it was not included in the FL. But it would be more logical to give it to the E-Class also, and to ditch the old system definitely. They share the same platform, why not the same telematics? And it sometimes happen that a car get an update without facelift. Look at the CLS, who get the non-SBC brakes when the E was FL, without beeing facelifted itself!

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

The E might get the same update for the 2009 model year here in the U.S since it and the CLS use the same "guts" for everything.

Looks pretty good - What can mercedes ebnz really do for the next generation of this car? It will be very difficult to redesign this type of vehicle!

I thought it was Cordes who initiated CORE??? Not sure since he was only running the show for a hot minute.

Well i certainly hope it does get it, not impossible.

And it sometimes happen that a car get an update without facelift. Look at the CLS, who get the non-SBC brakes when the E was FL, without beeing facelifted itself!
Naturally, as the cls is based on the E and not vice versa so if its donor hardware is changed....... Remember when the interior of the clk got updated along with the C class facelift, before the the clk's own facelift. i just think when you put certain things together like a) E is the donor for cls and got its fl already. b) There'll be an all new one in about a year's time unlike cls. c) numbers game i.e benz shifts approx 50000 cls/yr while the E almost quads that so it will be vastly more extensive/expensive to do.
But haven't said all that it's not impossible that it'll get it and i for 1 hope it does. Think it needs it if it's to stay competitive till the end

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

Yeah, good points. I think you're right and it won't get it.

Re: Official pictures: CLS (engines: 280, 350 CGI, 500, 63 AMG)

It would be may too expensive to implement the new command into these existing models. so what they did is update the software which is very simlair to the that of the S and C but using the old controls.

Imagine the wiring that would have to change along with the interior parts. Major costs, which probably aren't worth it midlife.
