SL-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (R231)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

If I could then I will get a slightly used car, I have no doubt the initial depreciation will be massive. Like Jethro said on the last paragraph, the car exist because Merc and AMG can build one.

It exists because MB and AMG can sell it. Every (western) car company can make such a car, but Mercedes is one of the few who can actually sell it.

It's sad that the SL is such an ugly car :(

Exactly, the SL is so effing ugly that it turns you off completely. The SL 65 seems almost pointless given the lighter, almost as powerful SL 63, which is also due another power bump soon. And, 285 section tires with a V12? Good luck.

The biggest problem of this car is the ugly nose which is actually less ugly than the non AMG model. What a pity that the car carrying SL badge is so unattractive from the front and repititive of its former self from the rear. This design is acceptable for the less expensive SLK model, which in current form is more uglier than this SL. The SLS is the only option imo if you want to buy a Mercedes convertible in this price range. The imaginary Benz on my avatar would have been a much better design for the current SL.

The Performance Pack SL 63 beats the SL 65 in several key acceleation metrics; things look up 65's way in the higher speeds though. It has fancier MCT transmission, launch control, and still very important, is lighter by quite a bit.

I feel the same as you, I don't understand the point now for the SL65 AMG ,when the SL63 AMG power has advanced to the point where it is the quicker and much cheaper car as well. The test by C/D for SL63 AMG was for the 415kw (564PS) PP version and now the SL63 has been upgraded to 430kW (585PS) standard. This will probably be a shade quicker at higher speeds. The SL65 AMG should have been upgraded to the same spec as the previous SL65 AMG Black Series with 493kW (670PS), maybe then it would have justified the extra cost by having a sizable power difference with the SL63 AMG.

We had the chance to get our hands on a 2014 Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG. Included this video review you will find some strange German humor a host with a strong German accent and the beast from Mercedes-AMG itself.

If you are brave enought you get a taste of the Start Up and Exhaust sound. We share our experience from the Test Drive and try to give you a daily-driver oriented In-Depth Review of the 2014 Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG.

Some numbers? There is a fine 6 Liter V12 that has 630 hp. Those are good for a maximum torque of 1.000 Nm. Topspeed? 300 km/h .. 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.0 seconds. Not included in those numbers - a bunch of driving fun.

Hope you enjoy the clip!

The German Fast Lane Daily crew had a chance to test drive the new 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. The new SL65 AMG is powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine making 621-hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7-SPEED AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS transmission 0 to 60 mph comes in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. However it carries a hefty price tag of $215,250!

MERCEDES-AMG SL 65 to end in 2018
After the production of the Mercedes-AMG G 65 ended with the model change, now in 2018 the next 12-cylinder from Affalterbach may follow: the Mercedes-AMG SL 65 Roadster production comes to a close in June 2018 according to MB Passion. Officially, they did not want to confirm this in Affalterbach, but it was also not denied.

Basic price of 240.201,50 Euro
The top model of the R 231 series - the Mercedes-AMG SL 65 - should therefore roll off the line for the last time before the end of May 2018 before the engine in the series 231 in June 2018 will be completely history. The model is currently still available for the base price of €240.201

The 6.0-liter V 12 bi-turbo engine of the SL 65 has 463 kW / 630 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, which catapults the big roadster to the 100 km/h mark in just 4.0 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG SL 65 - the gentleman and high performance athlete
The discontinuation of the model would be a further step to the renouncement of the 12-Zylinder engines of AMG, whose removal we personally however - on longer view - must expect. For collectors, therefore, now remains one of the last specimens of the SL 65 high-performance athlete with V12-BITURBO lettering on the front fenders and the distinctive rear with among others large diffuser and chromed double tailpipe trims in AMG V12 design. Too bad for the SL 65 - more Mercedes was so far hardly imaginable.

The SL 65 might be discontinued later this year, as some folks expected. May be the last chance to get one. :)

It seems the strategy is to keep the 65 AMG engines for the S-Class and S-Coupe until the current models are discontinued, and trying to update the engine as much as possible for the Maybach models.

It was not that difficult to predict taking into account how old this engine is.

That engine is indeed ancient, like 16 years old now but it served it's purpose pretty well.I hope they'll develop a new one before the dominance of EQ begins.

A highly doubt there is a single manufacturer out there developing a new V12 engine to be honest.

The engine is based on it's NA predecessor, the 5.8L M137 and the twin-turbo 5.5L M275, so the engine is exactly 20 years old now.

I had a S65 12 years ago, and now I think MB is commiting robbery with what they charge for the current S65 & SL65. The 63s are faster at virually all speeds. V8 engine smoothness is also at an all-time high.

Back then a 65 was head-and-shoulders faster than the 5.4L V8 & and 6.2 V8, so the price was justified. Now it's a money grab for the suckers walking into a MB dealership and demand the most expensive car on the showroom floor.
