GLE [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLE (W166)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
Some info on the standard headlights. :)

The updated GLE comes standard with H7 reflectors for the low beam and high beam. The blinkers on the lower inside use bulbs, and the DRLs on the outside LEDs. On the AMG models ILS with full LEDs is standard, and optional on the others GLEs.

This differs for the GLE Coupe, where all models include ILS with full LED headlights as standard equipment. Applies only to models in Germany, though, and may differ elsewhere.

- 442 PS system performance
- V6 gasoline engine (M276) with 333 PS
- lithium-ions high-voltage battery with a power of 8.8 kwh with 115 PS
- max. speed at electric driving: 130 km/h
- empty weight (kg) 2.465
- vehicle load capacity (kg) 585

I'm a little bit confused because of the total power. MB Passion says the car has a system performance of 442 PS. But when I add the both PS figures I get a result of 448 PS.

^ Doesn't look like it. The Maybach is supposed to be based on the next generation GLS. :)

Maybach crossover will have to wait until the next-generation GLS arrives
According to a recent report, Mercedes won't offer a Maybach crossover until the next-generation GLS arrives in a few years.

Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes Sales & Marketing boss Ola Källenius said a GLS-based Maybach "could be interesting for the future" but it would most likely be based on the next-generation model.

While that's still a ways off, the next-generation model will reportedly be based on the same platform that underpins the S-Class. The magazine goes on to say the Maybach variant will likely be powered by the same twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine that resides in the worldcarfans. However, the model could also be offered with the company's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine to help increase its appeal in markets where models are taxed based on their engine displacement. Unfortunately, since the model will be aimed primarily at the Chinese and American consumers there might not be a diesel-powered variant.

The rear quarter panel has not aged well. This car is showing it's age despite facelift unfort. And the funny part is, they brought it to the market earlier than necessary. The previous generation was still selling well.

The aeroacoustics could also be further improved to benchmark level, they write, by, for example, increasing the front glass thickness to 5 mm, and refining the mounts.

I never would have thought that increasing the glass thickness would reduce drag, thus increasing aerodynamics.

Wolf the outer beams look like Xenons or are they just Projector Beam lights with H7bulbs/reflectors?

This is the Mercedes answer to the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine. More power than the Volvo but it has much higher emissions (80g/km) than the brilliant 49g/km from the XC90, this is probably due to the Volvo been capable of 40km on electric/battery power vs 30km for the Mercedes. GLE 500e is quicker than Volvo, 0-100km/h in 5.3sec compared to 5.6sec. Pretty good match up then!

Yes, the outers are H7 projector beam lights. MB also offers a 4 cylinder based e model in the C 350 e and probably soon also in the GLC 350 e. The four cylinder from the C 250 is weaker than in the Volvo, though, but the electric engines seem to have comparable power of around 60 kW. MB's specified system output of 205 kW is again slightly less than the sum of 155 + 60 kW. :)

I think the article used the word aeroacoustics instead of aerodynamics.

Aeroacoustics refers to the noise generated due to drag/ air resistance/ etc

Yes. Some aero-acoustic testing around the front windows, in this case the GL. GLE testing may have been similar, and resulting in an increase to 5mm glass thickness. :)

Top aeroacoustic in S-Class quality

As the very first car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz has researched the psychoacoustic qualities of vehicles to find out more about aeroacoustic. Here both high frequencies of wind noise as well as the contribution of low frequencies, and in particular the audibility of voices was examined and optimised. During their research, the engineers devoted themselves intensively to the airflow around the vehicle body, the sealing systems on windows and doors as well as the body-in-white. The main focus of such work is not just on the absolute sonic pressure (dB (A)). The aim is rather to generate acoustic which is as homogenous and harmonious as possible, where neither definite frequency ranges nor individual vehicle components or sectors are dominant, as from a speed of about 120 km/h the wind noises are the dominant acoustic quantity. Tyre or engine noises are relegated to the background. Individual aeroacoustic measures taken:
  • optimised A-pillar and housing of outside mirror
  • reinforcement of the underbody to avoid low-frequency noises
  • acoustic front windscreen and optional acoustic side windows made with multilayer glass technology to provide great noise insulation
  • use of improved sealing systems with optimised lip seals
  • additional aeroacoustic sealing levels in rear compartment
  • improved clamping for door windows

Another great production was just released, covering the first part of MBRT15. :)
