From CAR:

Maserati has unveiled a convertible version of its gorgeous Granturismo. Called the Grancabrio, it’s the first four-seat convertible from the Italian company and will make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2009.
How has the Granturismo been turned into the Maserati Grancabrio?

With the apt application of a can opener. The svelte Pininfarina looks of the coupé are kept with the gaping oval nose, angular headlights, triple side vents and upright rear. But rather than a metal roof there’s now an automatic canvas hood, and thanks to Maserati’s promise of the Grancabrio having ‘the longest wheelbase on the market’ there are also four proper seats.
Does the Grancabrio get Maserati’s 4.2- or 4.7-litre V8?

Power comes from the same 4.7-litre V8 that’s found in the Granturismo S, which means 433bhp produced at 7000rpm and 362lb ft coming in at 4750rpm. All that action is then sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic, though the extra weight of the soft-top's necessary bracing is expected to add a few tenths on top of the coupé’s five second 0-62mph sprint.

When the Grancabrio goes on sale early in 2010 it’ll complete a three-strong line-up for Maserati, alongside the Quattroporte and Granturismo. Expect the Maserati Grancabrio to cost at least £90,000.

Press Release

THE NEW MASERATI GRANCABRIO TO PREMIERE IN FRANKFURT
The Maserati GranCabrio, the first four-seater convertible in the Trident carmaker's history, will make its world wide debut on September 15 at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The introduction of the GranCabrio - the Trident's third prong - completes Maserati's product line-up that now consists of three different families of models: Quattroporte, GranTurismo, GranCabrio.

The GranCabrio represents the very essence of Maserati in terms of open-top cars. It's a Maserati in the purest sense of the word: from the unmistakable style by Pininfarina to the spacious interior, from the craftsmanship of each detail to the driving pleasure and performance. The Maserati GranCabrio enriches all five senses in a shared open-air experience, without sacrificing comfort and performance. A dream car designed and built for men and women who love to live life in an understated - though sophisticated - manner. Like all the made in Maserati open-top convertibles: special cars aimed at refined connoisseurs.

In fact the GranCabrio is continuing the Maserati tradition in open-top cars, joining models that have played such an important part in the Modena carmaker's history such as the 1950 A6G Frua Spyder, 1960 3500GT Vignale Spyder, 1964 Mistral Spyder, 1968 Ghibli Spyder and 2001 Spyder designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car that marked Maserati's return to the United States. In the footsteps of tradition, the GranCabrio opens a new chapter, because never before have four-seater top-down models ever been produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti Maserati factory. Four proper seats, so that the rear passengers are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars of the journey.

The GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 litre V8, 323 kW engine and is the convertible with the longest wheelbase on the market. The GranCabrio's roof is strictly canvas-made, emphasizing the link with the Maserati tradition.

The Maserati GranCabrio will be marketed starting next winter, and experienced by customers the world over from the following spring.

Another gorgeous open top luxury sportster. Marcus is gonna sh!t his pants...

LOL you and Ty know me so well....

And yes it is gorgeous. I mean really. Italian cars are just so special in that way. Their names, looks, engines, they way their engineers and test drivers explain them.

Between this new Maser, the S5 Cabrio, new 911 Turbo Cabrio, DBS Volante and the stanbys like the SL63, Gallardo LP560 Spyder, and the RR DHC I'd have all convertibles!

This Maser in particular lends its line well to a convertible, low, slinky, sexy...can't wait to hear the press conference with all the broken vowels that sound right because of the accent.

It is very interesting that they've gone with a softtop when we clearly saw them testing a folding hardtop.

I just thought about it, I'll wait for the inevitable S version with the subtle body enhancements and extra power....we all know its coming.
