Petrol Mica looks stunning on the 7er.

Some call it stunning, some call it stu...nah.

Over the last years, (standard) exterior and interior color choices in premium cars have become worse and worse imo. I loved the days when Daimlers and BMWs came in bright yellow, light blue, or real green.

Or red... Love those days.

...and leaving me recalling a wonderful memory from my yesteryears (February 1978):

Having returned to Munich at about 1 a.m. from a very strenuous 11 hour (!!) drive from Frankfurt in the midst of an epic winter storm in my 1972 VW 1302, I managed to get stuck in deep snow on an unplowed, remote side street. I saw quad headlamps approaching in my rearview mirror and stopping behind me. I got out of my car, recognizing a then very new metallic dark green 7 series from which a distinguished-looking, perhaps late 40-ish gentleman emerged. Immediately recognizing my predicament, he graciously offered to tow me free. Obviously, his new 7er was equipped with M+S tires (as opposed to then-dunce 24 year old me-financially challenged and rolling on summer tires). I wanted to show my gratitude by offering to get together for a drink "on me", but he simply smiled and said "Scho guat, junger Mann. I hob gern geholfa.".

Some call it stunning, some call it last stu...nah.

...und Bakelit-Lenkräder gefälligst ?

Never were the 7 series (E23) and 6 series (E24) more closely related. As the E24s' market introduction actually preceded that of the the E23, the 7 series could actually be considered a "6 derivative".The E23 7 series represented the pinnacle of "German luxury sedandom" for a brief while. And then came the M-B W126 in fall of 1979.

...continuing to wax the nostalgic:

BMW South Africas' E23 M745i. The M635is' M88/3 290 PS "evo" transplanted in its' engine bay. Less than 200 built. An "M7" if there ever was one.

I believe these bright colours were lead-based, and thus a danger for the general health.

Yes if you go through a cars back catalog of colours and you think that one will do. You would probably find out it is no longer available due to environmental issues. There are a lot of colours even from the nineties and naughties that are no longer available.

Out of curiosity, what exactly is real green?
Oh man, I did not see that coming :).

Actually, it was mostly about ext./int. combos, I am quite fanatic about that.
Radicolor if you want.

Some quick examples out of my sketchbook. Most of these colors still exist in variations but when you see them side by side, you'll realize how toned-down they are in mass production vehicles. A shame.

Alpina 635: they still have a similar paint in store but with more blue nuances, unfortunately.

I'm aware that this is not 'original' SL but I would still love to see a current S-class in these shades of green.

One very cool, current greyish green comes from Dacia, surprisingly (they have/had some other interesting colors, as well):

Other great colors/combos, in general. As said, only shots from the last weeks.
