Looks like the ML250 BlueTEC diesel might make it to the USA? :)

The same engine also will find a home in the M-class SUV. We’re not sure yet whether it will supplant the ML350 BlueTec and its diesel six, or whether the ML250 BlueTec will be an addition to the range. As popular as the ML250 is in Europe, we do have some concerns about the engine motivating the ML at a pace suitable to American tastes—even if they’re diesel-friendly ones.

Marina Sacco and the mock-up of the 2012 Mercedes M-Class.
Designing an interior means form and function
A huge amount of work goes into designing a vehicle, but it’s far more than just the exterior appearance. The inside requires just as much attention, covering everything from how it looks to its integration with important safety features.
For Mercedes-Benz, the interior of the redesigned 2012 M-Class SUV started with sketches at the company’s design headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany.
The designers also use computer models and then full-size clay mockups to determine what the new vehicle will use.
“It takes a long time,” says Marina Sacco, an interior trim designer specializing in colour and materials.
“We started a few years ago and have continued to improve it.”
The design follows a basic theme that Mercedes-Benz reserves for its SUVs: the dash must have strong horizontal lines to give the feeling of spaciousness, while a dome over the centre stack controls hints at the engine’s power. The materials, meanwhile, convey a “welcome home” feeling, with soft-touch surfaces and wood highlights.
It isn’t enough to simply use home-style materials, though.
“The colours and materials have to work in all temperatures, whether very hot or very cold,” Sacco says.
“The leather must function, the plastic must function, and it can’t discolour. Everything has to stay as it is on the first day.”
To that end, everything that goes into the interior is thoroughly tested. Each material is placed under simulated sunshine, and in cold and heat extremes to ensure that it doesn’t peel, become brittle or fade.
It’s also very important that the final design and the materials used look like they belong in a Mercedes, Sacco says.
“Most customers don’t like screaming colours,” she says.
“People like black, brown, beige and grey. Sports cars are allowed a little bit of red, but on a car like this (M-Class), it’s nice to have natural colours. This is about driving the car and going to the outdoors.”
Authenticity of the materials is also important, and for the new model, the company has introduced an optional trim design that includes unfinished, open-grain wood.
“You can feel the structure of the grain on it,” Sacco says, which is very important.
It seems that, although Mercedes-Benz uses only real wood in the M-Class, some customers complained that their passengers thought the high-gloss version was actually made of plastic.

Armored Mercedes-Benz M-Class Guard announced

For ML350 BlueTec and ML500

Mercedes-Benz is now offering armored versions of the ML350 BlueTEC and ML500 which are in compliance with the VR 4 protection class.

Compared to the regular ML, the armored version comes with specific adaptations for the attachment of the armor elements, along with modified doors and a front structure with reinforcing elements. The windows have a polycarbonate layer on the inside for protection against shards, while special steel is used for the A-, B- and C-pillars, as well as in the roof. This steel was also used to reinforce the passenger area and boosts the SUV's structural firmness.

Both armored MLs ride on 20-inch AMG light alloy wheels with run-flat tires which enable the vehicles to run for up to 30 km (18.6 miles) at speeds of 80 km/h (50 mph) even if the tire is entirely flat.

The ML350 BlueTEC is powered by a V6 diesel engine producing 258 HP (190 kW) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft), while the ML500 comes with a V8 gasoline mill generating 408 HP (300 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft). Both engines are connected to a 7G-TRONIC Plus transmission. The BlueTEC does 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 9.4s while the ML500 in 6.5 seconds. Both of them are capable of reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).

The armored SUVs will be available on order starting March 15 in both LHD and RHD variants, with pricing starting from 105,050 EUR for the ML350 BlueTEC Guard and 118,650 EUR for the ML500 Guard.

Other models available in the Guard program include the E250, E350, E350 BlueTEC, E500, S600, S600 Pullman and G500.

Thanks to Fab who posted the MBUSA changes for model year 2014. Not so sure about the decision to replace the ML350 BlueTEC with the ML250 BlueTEC. Should be even more fuel efficient, though. ;)

Good. Didn't make sense to have a 4-cylinder lugging around such a heavy SUV, at least in the U.S. market.

Audi and BMW have 6-cylinders in this class why wouldn't Mercedes keep and refine their on V6 is beyond me. Good move. Keep the 4-cylinders in the C, CLA, GLK and GLA, everything else should be a V6.
