A5/S5/RS5 New Audi A5 (spy pics & info), thread 2

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive and grand touring coupé cars produced by Audi. Production: 2007-
cool car it seems.. will give the 3er coupe and CLK something to think about..

PS
Is that read window really that long or is that tape?

I really don't undertand why Audi will build a coupe any different than the Nouvolari. At first I was in denial, but now is obvious that it is going to look like the PS..It's really dissapointing. Not a good start for the A5. IMO

There is an interesting article in the latest edition of Germanys´ Auto Motor und Sport magazine pertaining to the VW-Groups´ future modular structure (VW-Group PR has apparently become averse to using the term platform) application.

The new Audi longitudinal modular structure which will be introduced in the upcoming A5 will be utilized as a basis not only for all Audis´ from A4 upwards (of course, save the R8), but also supply the platform (uhh, that word again) for automobiles as diverse as the next generation Bentley Continental/Flying Spur, the successors to the current VW Passat and Phaeton (!), an upcoming Porsche SUV positioned below the Cayenne and possibly some future Lamborghini and/or Bugatti model. Very substantial economies of scale should all of this come into fruition.

But, an obvious question pops into my mind:

What are the plans for the platform to be used on the upcoming Porsche Panamera ? Or is that platform actually Cayenne-based ?

Clues, anyone ?

Panamera has been developed from Porsche alone:

For a start, the new car will be built on a new platform rather than on anything Porsche has used before. This is presumably why the Panamera is being described as the company's "fourth model series" after the 911, Boxster and Cayenne - the recently-announced Cayman S is built on Boxster underpinnings and doesn't count as a series in its own right. Porsche also says that this is not a joint venture: no other manufacturer will be involved in the development of the Panamera's platform.

Audi's new modular platform might be used for the succesor of Phaeton and Bentley GT/Flying Spur but it's certainly too expensive to be used in next Passat (which curently uses VW's modular platform known as PQ46) so that info is not right.

How can a FWD platform (Audi modular) be used in a RWD car (Bentley)? :t-hands:

I guess Panamera platform will be used for Bentleys ... Especially with all the PAG involvement in VAG.

All Audi platforms are designed for AWD. Bentley GT/FS are currently AWD if you haven't noticed.:D

It is very possible that the next Continental GT and Flying Spur will be made from Aluminium (Audi Space Frame technology). Phaeton might continue to be made from cheaper , conventional materials (steel).

LOL, it's following a new S-class...and a Cayenne on the Ring

Looks like they're really pushing the car, but I really wouldn't know about the sound of the engine...too much other sounds to make that out for me.

Very nice, thanks Eni.

Does anybody else think that they might be building the RS5/S5 right now along side the A5 so as to compete directly with the M3 when it is released. That might explain the V8 sound and quad pipes we've seen before on test models.

The S5 will have similar power to RS4 and possibly the same engine retuned to around 400 hp. No decision has been made yet for the RS5 but according to my information the car is designed to take the 5.2 lt V10 under the hood.

From the looks, with the sholder-line
I think this is the most accurate ps, except for the nose-job.

If this car is fitted with the 5.2liter V10 in RS5 form, it most likely will kill it`s compeditors from AMG and M. I highly doubt the V10 will be fitted to this car.

Except a car in Huckfeldt's CGI has like 22" wheels. :D

I'm eager to see Audi's strategy. Will they stick to strategy when putting V6 engines in TT & A3 performance versions, V8 in A4 & A5, V10 in A6, A7, V12 in A8 & Q7 (V12 TDI), while R8 will have V8, V10 & V12 TDI.

Or will they go AMG way with all the mambo-jumbo: putting V8 everywhere (in Audi's case V10).

V10 in RS5 will be an over kill. Sooner or later turbos will be used again ... So, V8 will be more than enough ...

Since the RS5 will probably not be be launched until 2-3 years it might be powered by a turbo charged version of the V8 since 420hp will not be that impressive in year 2010.

The A5 is based on the A5 and can guarantee you that it will not house a V10.

The A5 is based on the A5?

The A5 is the first car to use Audi's new modular architecture. Some people refer to it as B8 platform although that is wrong.

It doesn't matter what you can guarantee , the A5 will be able to fit the 5.2 lt V10 under the hood. Whether Audi will use it or not it's another story.

I remember a couple of years ago when everyone was saying that A6 cannot take a V10 under the hood and that RS6 will have a turbocharged V8. How wrong they were...:D

Oh, so the A5 isn't based on the A4? Then pardon me. Then a V10 is a possibility if Audi wants to. Any word on the A7, reality or fiction?

Very logical well rounded post Eni, this gives a full view of Audi`s reasons for using the engines and engine sizes which is all within reason, even with the performance models.

By no means I hope this doesn`t cut your enthusiasm Yannis but I don`t believe Lamborghini will "mass-produce" the 5.2liter V10 for the upcoming
performance Audi models.

By Lambo's engine you mean the 5.0 lt V10 used in Gallardo? That engine was designed in Germany from Audi engineers just like the Aluminium frame in the Gallardo (it's essentially ASF) and almost every part of the car.
When Audi bought Lamborghini the company was almost dead , it didn't had the money, the engineers or the resources to compete with Ferrari and the rest. Gallardo and it's engine were made starting nearly from scratch using Audi know how and human resources.

BTW Audi is using an updated version of Gallardo's V10 in S6 with 5.2 lt displacement (instead of 5.0 lt) and direct fuel injection (FSI).

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
