Mercedes-Benz W221 S-class sales fall

DOA = Dead On Arrival?

Yes. A dead (but pretty) cat the XJ is. Couldn't (quickly) find Jaguar's sales figures and since they split from Ford no longer lists them in their monthly figures.

How is the entire luxury car market doing, how is the sales of the S-class compare to its competitors? Did it lose any market share?

Yes that's the more pertinent question I think. How is it performing relative to other cars in the sector? I don’t believe it would be doing poorly.

I remember reading about the S being a huge cash cow when the W221 was released. While they were desperate to get it out asap they had to make sure it was perfect, hence the relatively conservative techno bits.

Ha ha (DOA) ...very amusing Marcus. :)

Amazing that Lexus is the king in this segement.

Not necessarily. The LS climbing the charts is as a result of very aggressive marketing in the US. Toyota has in a short time frame of 20 years achieved what Audi is trying to do in the US as we speak. Derived out of a mass producing manufacturer Lexus has done a terrific job establishing itself on the podium along with BMW and Mercedes.

Here is an sales reportage from my local car dealerships:

Audi A8- sold 27 units
BMW 7 series- Sold 19
Lexus LS -sold 66 units
Mercedes-benz S class - Sold 92 units
JAGUAR XJ - Sold 9 units
Information from Ray Catena Dealerships, last month

The S-class gets good sales around my area.

^ That doesn't surprise me one bit. I would be more interested to see the European sales reports -- Americans are fixated with the tri-star.

If the stock market is tanking and home values are falling, there is literally no cash left for the luxury range of the middle class buyer. The core, recession proof buyers are still buying but the 2nd and 3rd tier ones have fallen in love with the C, 3er and A4 etc. so those are doing better.

Using the notion that the S is now out of reach for would be buyers, I think it's time for the S350 (with the CGI, SLK style, why the hell does MB have so many variations of the same damn engine!!?) over here in the states. How about the short wheelbase model too? Bring in more sales by spicing it up. This is the first S class series on sale in America without any optional engines below the V8. Ooo, how about the 320cdi as well. Get them over here MB!

Now when Lexus are nabbing many power looking for the S-class experience with a more economic engine, it's time for MB to bring over the S350.

If this trend goes on it will be a problem for Mercedes. Audi and BMW won't be really concerned, as they don't count that much on the 7er and A8 for their benefits, but the S-Class is decisive for Mercedes!

No worries for MB, boosted C-class sales compensates. New E and CLK on the way as well which will give an increase in revenue.

No S350 for the U.S. A 6-cylinder S-Class would be the odd man out in the segment, Mercedes is above that now. Once the facelift happens, and if they give the V8s direct injection we should see a S450 with about 365-370hp and the S550 with over 400hp and then of course the S400 Hybrid.

I really don't see why this about the S-Class' sales was made into news anyway. There is absolutely nothing going on with the S' sales that doesn't happen to any car. It has been on sale in the U.S. since Jan 2006 as a 2007 model, it can't keep posting gains forever.

Nor is Mercedes going to be in "trouble" if the S-Class doesn't explode over the charts again. It will always have some sales and like others have mentioned there is a new E and CLK coming. The E in particular is another profit center for Mercedes-Benz. The S will pick up if they add the S450 to the U.S. forr 2010's facelift and the hybrid will be a hit also. There isn't nearly any need for panic or worry at this point.

Now if they add more models here along with the facelift and sales continue to spiral downwards then it will be time to worry.

While i truly believe that the current recession definitely affects everyone,it is really silly to single the S like this.
