iPhone 5 2012

Well I never expected K-A to even want to use any android device for more than a day or two, good to know that you are willing to try again, and please, make that YOU MUST download Apex launcher from the play store. Don't use that touchwiz crap from Samsung.

Yep. Like I say, I might have strong opinions but I'm willing to try things to gain more perspective.

If Best Buy is willing to let me try out different phones for 30 days, 3 different times, and not pay any restocking fee's or anything, then why not! This a much cheaper hobby than flipping cars around. :D

Is that a new keyboard (Apex Launcher?)? I just downloaded the new Android Jelly Bean or Ice Cream Sandwich or whatever the hell it is that comes on the GS3, and with it came the new Google Keyboard, which has the new voice control, but it DOES NOT have Swipe, which is making me crazy. If I want Samsung's so called "Swype" which I've heard isn't so great, I have to apparently downgrade to Samsung's own keyboard, but then I lose Google-Voice-To-Text. With iOS you had all this in one, just the way the phone comes. Once I figure this out life will be much easier with this phone.

Also, how do I get it to connect to my Mac?! I just plugged it in to transfer some music and it's telling me I have to download some other program to get them to Sync. Bah. Gonna try and figure that out right now.

Ah, okay I just Googled that. Interesting that you can customize the whole homescreen. Might be too much for me to deal with (stuff like that gets kinda overwhelming to me sometimes, i.e which to choose, learn all the new features, how I want it to be, etc.). Didn't know there was a better option than what's on the phone now.

iOS doesn't have Swype.

iOS doesn't have Swype.

It has it's own version of it (don't know what they call it), where you simply swipe the general area of text you want and it's intelligent to figure out what you're trying to say. Also, it auto fills corrections. So far, I can't figure out how to get the new "Jelly Bean" keyboard to do either of those things. All it gives me is a really weak selectable-fix for text that I actually have to manually click to apply, and even at that, it isn't very accurate or good.

Yeah, that's not really anything like Swype though. You're just after a keyboard with a better prediction system and auto fill capabilities.

It does more than just the whole home screen, you can customize the app draw, docks, various actions for the home and volume key, set gesture actions eg swipe up on the screen will either show or hide the status bar, go to certain folder, update weather, etc. It does take a little time to familiarize yourself especially when you are so used to iOS.

Here is how my S2 looks, lock screen by Widget locker (with 8 hidden short cuts) and my Apex launcher home screen.

I'll have to look into that. Sounds interesting, though something I'd have to take some time on and really learn.

Currently trying to move Music Files from my Mac into the phone, which is a huge pain in the ass. Had to DL a 3rd party source onto my Comp, and then do another 2 step process to get it into my phone. With my iPhone I plugged right in, connected right to iTunes, and voila, music files transferred. This one's a much bigger headache, lol.

Also, another thing that sucks is the dock connector in my car (and all cars almost nowadays) has a dock connector that goes right into an Apple device, bringing it seamlessly into your cars interface, not to mention Siri on iOS 6 being accessible through the cars interface as well.

Funny how you realize all the give and takes each has after using both. Twitter and Facebook are two examples. I liked Twitter in iOS 6 more because it's seamlessly built into it, also you can view Instagram pictures directly on Twitter on iOS 6 (can't on Android for some weird reason, you have to click the Instagram picture itself which takes you right to Instagram), and it seems a bit more polished in some respects.... though on the flipside, you can view Twitter in landscape mode with Android, and for some reason can't on iOS, which is a huge plus to me. Tit for tat between these two, it's funny.

Yes you do need to take some time to get the best out of the phone, it took me about a month to fully configure my phone to my preference.

Yes it is a massive huge pain in the ass to do so, don't even bother with Samsung Kies, I treat my phone as portable USB drive and drop my music file directly into the folder created in my SD card like how you transfer documents and files between hard drives.

Crap, I did use the Samsung "Kies". It was a total pain, but a few hours later, I got my music. Took me 2 minutes on my iPhone. :bigtears:

I by pass Kies completely, just drop your music file inside your phone like how you copy and paste files between your hdd and your other storage device, same with transferring photos. Only use Kies to update the firmware and backup your data, other than I have managed to avoid Kies without any problems. Kies is rubbish IMO.

Congrats on your Android purchase!

On the other hand, I know exactly what you mean. I remember trying to put music on my HTC Evo and it was so annoying. I just put about 2 albums on it and used my iPod for my music. Plus don't even think about putting videos on there...problem after problem with that one. That is one thing that I like about my iPhone and iTunes.

Either way enjoy your android. I might get one in another 2 years or whenever I can get out of this contract.

Thanks! Some things I like about it more than iOS, some things I don't. All in all, I still prefer the U/I of iOS more, and I especially find iOS's Apps to be more user friendly in many cases (like Stock apps, for example), and also missing iOS's calender/reminder setup and really missing iOS's keyboard. And REALLY missing iOS's Twitter implementation which is way more streamlined and refined. Oh, and I'm REAALLLY missing iOS 6's new 'Do Not Disturb" Feature which is not only a great sleeping tool, but Android DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A "GOING TO SLEEP" MODE!

Things I like about Android that iOS doesn't have is the in how the dropdown menu (on the new "Jelly Bean" which I just realized I'm one of the rare people in the U.S to already have) now has an easy way to click on or off Wifi/Bluetooth/Cell Data/etc. which makes it quick and easy, I LOVE that you can see what programs are using your battery as well. I also like that you can close all Apps at once (new feature on Jelly Bean as older Androids are far worse than iOS at seamless App closing I've found) which iOS doesn't have.

Other likes and dislikes. Android certainly has its "merits" but overall iOS seems more for me. As far as screen size, the GS3 is proportioned well for my 6'4 frame and Basketball Player hands, but at the same time, I find multitasking and one-handed using difficult and frustrating even for me, while my 4S was so easy to use with one hand. The GS3 is a little to intrusively large and bulky sometimes, but when needed the extra screen space becomes a virtue. In a perfect world, I think something in between the iPhone and GS3 in size would be perfect.

We'll see, but I love taking advantage of this 30 day return period (which I'm using as a "trial" for different devices now) to try out these different great devices. I definitely will pick up iPhone 5 if I can hopefully get my hands on it by the time this 30 day return-period is up, but it seems like nobody can still keep it in stock. In the meantime, I will learn more about and enjoy the GS3 and have a more thorough judgement on which OS is more "for me".

What I REAAAAAALLY miss is the iPhone's material quality and design. The GS3 is such a tacky feeling phone with all the cheap surfaces and design. However, I guess I can say that while I was so into keeping my iPhone pristine as an enthusiast, I really don't care about the condition of my GS3, as long as the screen is good and in perfect shape then I'm good. With iPhone, one scratch to the design and I'd be all anal and bummed like I would my car.

Can't you just switch your phone to silent and turn off the vibration alert?

Something sized like the Galaxy S2?

I can, but iOS 6 introduced a great new feature (which I'm sure Android will copy soon) called "Do Not Disturb". You set it up how you want it, i.e you can have certain people get through to you to call you (let's say Parents, Kids if you have them, Wife/Girl, or work related person to wake you up if urgent matter), and also set it up to where after a certain amount of call attempts (of which will be silenced), the person can get through (again, in case of urgent emergency). I miss that convenience.

Another issue I'm having is feeling the wrath of Android's fragmentation. Makes it harder to find support for issues, i.e when you search for something, you have all these different OS versions, all these different hardwares to sift through. Also, I realized I'm running Jelly 4.1, and there's apparently a 4.2 out there, which has a better keyboard.... but guess what? That version and its improvements aren't available to me. Really annoying. I realize that people use 3rd party Apps to fix a lot of shortcomings (like the OEM interface looks of the GS3 with the ugly icons or lousy Samsung Keyboard), but as good as it is to have options, I hate having to pay for a Swiftkey to get an approved keyboard when this phone for its price should come with a state of the art keyboard already. Not to mention, all these 3rd party Apps drain extra battery, and Swiftkey has been reported by many on Jelly Bean to consume lots of battery. I'd rather not deal with that so I keep the lousy Samsung keyboard.

Also, with Android, there are a lot of "hidden energy consumers" that fortunately they show you, but you have to find them, or "Force Quit". With iOS, you just shut down the Apps and you're ensured that nothing is hiddenly running.

OH! And another thing that's annoying to someone like me who reads a lot of articles; iOS's "double tap to perfectly fit text to screen" option is extremely intelligent, it formats the text to perfectly utilize the screen-space, yet not exceed it. My GS3's "double tap to fit text" is horrible, it always blows the text up to be too big, so I have to resize it manually down.... then when I'm using the phone with one hand, it's too big for me to actually zoom out with one hand (as I was easily able to on my iPhone 4S), lol.

And yeah, perhaps the GS2's size is that just-right balance. Phone size is something very personal, I've come to realize. People who say "one is better than the other", or "bigger is better" are being selfish. It's completely personal.

I think those all (in these last two posts) sum up the things that I've found disappointing with Android (as my intents were to list certain negatives rather than come across like I hate it or am disappointed in the overall user experience, of course there are pro's I have and can list as well).

What's funny is I've never been someone who likes to customize the engineering of things (I always like to customize surface aesthetic, however). I.e, I never work on my own cars, and being a music aficionado, I never like to have tons of knobs to tweak when it comes to levels.... I like a few knobs to control (Bass, Treble, really), and for the system to be smart enough to optimize it perfectly for me. That's why I think iOS is more "for me". I find it overwhelming to have to find all these third party sources to literally go into my phone and tweak things, and then of course give me a gazillion options to tweak myself. However, to some, that's a great necessity. I figure, if I have to keep modifying things, then what am I paying for? Apple has a holistic approach that tries to offer you the best, most clean experience, while Android gives you kind of a cluttered "canvas" that needs to be extensively modified, but if you're game for it, then the sky's the limit. "So similar yet so different" is the way to put it.

My sister got her iPhone 5 yesterday and today I ordered myself a Samsung Galaxy III. Sorry K-A :D

Well I have an S3 right now, and just played with my friend iPhone 5, and almost cried when I picked my phone back up. Yes, I am used to the more screen-real estate, and do like it when viewing the Web and watching videos (but not so much when trying to multitask with one hand especially) but the iPhone 5 is a gorgeous piece of hardware, is much faster than my phone, and has much better screen clarity, not to mention, the icons and UI actually look refined and not so crude and "80's" as my GS3. Oh, and his camera and recorder were more crystal and better as well.

His phone felt like it was worth $1,000 in my hands. My GS3 with its hideous easy-to-greasy back and fake "brushed aluminum" streaked plastic, and tacky plastic buttons felt like I was going to a cheap kids toy in comparison.

I've been playing around with my sisters Iphone and it looks good but I need the extra slot card. I went to the market to take closer look at red, white and blue SIII and I finally decided for the blue one. I've been using Android for three years and I love it, another reason why I chose SIII.
Also, Im only paying the half price compare to a Iphone 5. In my opinion SIII offer better value and at the same time its not half as bad as iPhone 5.

Get rid of touchwiz and start using apex launcher, you can download and use our own icons, and rearrange it to the way you want. Your S3 is also loaded with bloatware from the carrier, which really slows down the phone by having all these unnecessary background ads happening. As for the feel of the GS3 compare to the iphone, yeah Samsung has some work to do in that department.

How to I get rid of that bloatware??!! Sounds awful. Yeah, Apex launcher will be next. Touchwizz looks naasty. My friend who has the iPhone 5, even while trying to be nice, couldn't help but notice how crude it looked.

Still learnings lots of stuff about this phone, so trying not to get overwhelmed by all the customization apps. Will try touchwizz. Considering it's an App that will be constantly running, I assume it technically drains a little extra battery?
