X6 BMW X6 Concept & X6 Active Hybrid Concept (official pics & info)

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by German automaker BMW. The BMW X6 is the originator of the sports activity coupé (SAC), referencing its sloping rear roof design. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (styling featuring a sloping roof).
WHoa what happend to the car?

i hope this is not the way it will end up..

i hate concepts like this.. they always hype up..and then fail you..
what was the point of the X6 concepts really?
just to show us.. this is how great they can loook.. but they wont?

I don't mind the pillars, but dam those roof racks and the ugly side mirrors just destroy the look of the car.

We all know the sidemirrors wouldnt get into production. There are new EU standards that demand big sidemirrors, example C-class and new A4 are new cars with big sidemirrors. It aint pretty but its its needed.

The black lines/pillars in the rear mirrors arent pretty. They need to go.

????

We knew the car would end up like this ... There were many spy pics before - showing the car with huge X5-like side mirrors, and all the pillars visible.

So, why all the cry?

People who expected the production car would look like the Concept were very naive. ;)

Also: name me one pillarless 4dr production car. Name it. :D

****

The point of concepts? Great question. I agree they build a hype which is not delivered then in a production car. It could be very counter-productive sometimes. :eusa_doh:

I don't mind the b-pillar or the mirrors, it's the area in front of HK on rear doors that looks too busy, too much going on if you get what i mean...

The one in red circle bothers me most! It's simply out of place and should be removed. Plus, i don't see any purpose of it...

Mazda RX-8. It even has suicide doors, which the F5 was going to have but dropped due to cost reasons.

And why can't BMW make the X6 have frameless doors ala Merc CLS (and upcoming Audi A7)? Even old Subaru Forester SUVs have them.

I guess it has to something with the fact this is SUV, sitting high of the ground, higher center of gravity, and those you mention are sedans only (except Forester)... I could be wrong of course.:t-hands:

It should be there. Otherwise the rear side window won't be mobile. Straight vertical pole is needed there: as a rail for the glass - so the glass can move up & down. :t-cheers:

Otherwise the rear side window would be fixed (not movable).

All 4dr cars have that additional rail-pillar on rear doors. :usa7uh:

Btw, the whole thing looks much better with chromed greenhouse line. So, wait to see the car IRL.

Oh, I was told X6 press release was coming "soon" after Tokyo motor show (Oct 26th - Nov 11th).

Yeah but Audi's manage without the ugly small sticking pillars. No Audi has them and that's what makes their glass area so clean.

a) no sticking pillars when C pillar is vertical enough (not possible on X6!)

b) when C-pillar not vertical enough, Audi use additional piece of plastic (rail) at the bottom of C-pillar to support the window (check eg. A4 B7, A6, A8 etc)

Also ... many BMW models (X3, X5, tourings etc) have "sticking mini C-pillars" and no complaints have been made till now. :t-hands:

Yeah but that's because on the other models, the "sticking mini C-pillar" does not make the glass area so busy as it does in the X6, as pointed by some of the guys.

As for an example on how it can be done when the C-pillar is raked like on the X6 (or the CLS), we will see it done on the upcoming Audi A7.

Mind that unlike other BMW models, the X6 has a third side window ala Audi's, but, on Audi's there is no sticking C-pillar like on the X6. That is what makes the X6's glass area looks too busy. For example, the CLS also has them but its glass area does not look too busy because it does not have a third side window :

As for an example on how it can be done when the C-pillar is raked like on the X6 (or the CLS), we will see it done on the upcoming Audi A7. Audi's do not have these sticking mini C-pillars as it is their design signature, but it's also their design signature to have a third side window, so we will see how it can be done when the A7 arrives.

OK, point made.

X6 rear side window looks too busy.

Now we can move on.

Please do not make this thread BMW vs Audi ... again !!! :t-cheers:

Otherwise moderation will be needed. Hi-jacking a thread is a rule violation here, and can be sanctioned!!!

OK. I know the rules and I have no intention in violating them nor hijacking this thread. I love BMW's new design directions with the X6 and F5 but I really think they could have executed some of the details better. I am not comparing BMW vs Audi but as BMW starts having third side windows on some of their new designs (X6, F5), I just want to point out that if the mini sticking C-pillar is not eliminated, it will always make the rear side windows look 'too busy'. Not just on the X6 but also on the F5.
