Just read what Autocar have to say about the new Mk7 Golf and boy is it going to be tough on the competition. GTI will get an improved version of their eLSD system which is claimed to cut the ring time by a whooping 8 seconds, plus the new engine will be upping it's power by 50hp to 260hp. Two new 2.0TDI will be introduced, the first is a single turbo unit kicking out 181hp whilst the GTD (the diesel GTI) will get twin turbos and a class leading 220hp with torque levels to match. The design of the new platform and engines mean both petrol and diesels will share engine mounting points and gearbox housings which will lead to lower manufacturing costs and hopefully little to no increase in RRP with increased standard kit.

The old one was class leading and the new one have all the makings of repeating this.

VW's eLSD is a joke. It's not as effective as a mechanical LSD, plus it's consuming too many brake pads!

So, it's a win-win for VW and its dealers. VW get's to advertise a wanna-be LSD system and sell more GTIs, while dealers sell more brake pads to GTI owners.

^ True it does use braking to act like a traditional LSD which use brake pads but is that not true for DSC, I don't hear to any complaining about that. Plus have you ever driven a fwd car equipped with a proper LSD, the thing pulls the bloody arms out of you. eLSDs might not be the best solution in terms of outright grip but they are currently the best compromise between grip and drivability.

The Ford Focus RS has a mechanical LSD in the front. I've driven one of those. It was really good! I have also driven an E36 with LSD. Both LSDs (E36 and Focus RS) are from Quaife.

Yet, I am not the best to talk about heavy steering. My everyday car doesn't have assisted steering, just good old manual steering, and my second car, a Volvo, has a quite heavy, despite totally unresponsive, steering wheel.

eLSDs might not be the best solution in terms of outright grip but they are currently the best compromise between grip and drivability.

I don't say it's not effective. It is. Yet, it costs you money. A mechanical LSD would be much better.

It's improved eLSD clearly is effective to improve it's ring time by 8 seconds, that's the kind of improvement that even r-compound rubber struggles to achieve.

VW gets radical with new Golf
13 February 2012

The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 will blast in later this year as a leaner, safer, more economical car packed with technology usually associated with luxury models.

The all-new hatch will be available with a wider range of powertrains than today’s model, including a plug-in hybrid good for 243bhp and more than 50mpg, an electric model and a super-clean version fuelled by natural gas. The car is expected to be unveiled at the Paris show in September, before going on sale early next year.

Mainstream models will be powered by a completely new family of downsized petrol engines (codenamed EA211) and super-frugal diesel units (EA288). The range-topping non-GTD 2.0 diesel is good for 181bhp and 280lb ft (there’s also a twin-turbo 220bhp version on test for the GTD) and the most powerful 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine gets 138bhp and cylinder deactivation for increased economy. The larger petrol engines (EA888) will be sized at 1.8 and 2.0 litres.

The new Golf GTI — expected to be powered by a 260bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine — also promises to set new standards for hot hatches. Sporting the new VAQ electronically controlled front diff, it will, VW claims, delivers much “more agile steering behaviour” and a much greater sense of precision through the wheel. According to VW, a VAQ-equipped Golf has lapped the Nürburgring 8.0sec faster than prototypes with a conventional differential.

Next Volkswagen Golf's underpinnings revealed

All-wheel drive will be an option on the Golf’s new MQB platform, as will an updated version of VW’s Dynamic Chassis Control active dampers.

VW is promising to roll out a lightweight version of the Golf Mk7, with aluminium for the floor pressings, boot floor and windscreen base. Company sources would not say which models will get this alloy-steel hybrid structure, but it’s thought that the EV and GTI are the leading candidates. Even in its standard form, the new Golf is as light as the Mk4 model from the late 1990s, even though it is much safer in a collision.

The Golf will be one of the first VW Group cars to be based on the radical new MQB platform and its standardised components. MQB can be stretched all the way from underpinning the Polo supermini to the executive-sized Passat. It comes with its own bespoke factory and production lines, which will be rolled out across the world.

Among the Golf’s hi-tech options will be an 8in iPad-style dashboard touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue detection, 360deg parking sensors and Park Assist 2, a semi-autonomous system that can park the car in a tight supermarket-style space.

This might prick the interest of some of you, CAR magazine (UK) are claiming that VW are considering releasing a version above the Golf R in MK7. The Golf R is believed to getting a power boost to the tune of 295PS whilst this more powerful version probably named Golf RS will swap the 2.0TFSI for Audi's 2.5inline5 and develop a whopping 365hp, if it gets the green light this will be a slayer of the mighty and great of the car industry.

If you're refering the R26R that was a limited edition. The new Megane RS is normal interior, is just has a better chassis and a better tuning than GTI.

I'd prefere Audi to bring out the S and RS models before. Mercedes launches the AMG models togheter with the normal Mercedes models (Geneva 2012: Mercedes SL & Mercedes SL AMG), BMW launches the M models about one year later (Geneva 2011: BMW 6 Series Coupé & Geneva 2012; BMW M6 Coupé), Audi launches them at best at facelift, but ususally after. I can't say the RS4 B8 is old, but it could have come before. The RS3 is a shame, but well, I'd say it is an exception as it was an answer to BMW late coming 1 Series M.

Golfs get outdated so fast. That is not tha case with my Alfa 147 or any Audi A3 that are already about 10 years on the market. I can't deny the popularity of Golfs, but I doubt the Golf will be a better car than the A3 be it in looks, quality, or tech (LED, B&O,...). No doubt the Golf will be a good bang for you buck, but if not an A3, I'd even look at the new Volvo V40 which is nothing to laugh above. But the new A3 just blown out my mind. I'd love a 5 door version with a 300 PS 2.0 TFSI and Quattro. S3 Sportback FTW.

I'm going out on a limb but I think you will be surprised how soon the RS6 arrives compared to previous RS models.
