Current S Class, thought BMW 7 Series E65 inspired, is IMO best looking in class. I'm afraid the next S Class will be as bad as the new SL.

when the car started moving it sounded like it had the stop/star feature on it

Yes, was about to say the same. Everytime you hear the engine switch over, the car starts to move.

By the way, I think concerns of this not being a good-looking sedan are vastly exaggerated, in my opinion. There is none of that ambiguity that was always there with the SL during the mule and FEP days, where proportions looked all wrong. With the S, proportions look best in class, as always. I highly doubt the power of the newest MB headlights in disrupting the harmony in the sedan.

Automobile Magazine say every model of the new S-Class will debut as a hybred... (S550 to include a 510bhp bi-turbo V8)

Thay just introduced the 4.7liter bi-turbo V8 late last year in the 2012 models. I can`t believe it will bite the dust so soon.

If every S class model will be hybrid, that will take the fun out of the S class, but 510bhp for the entry level trim S class is alot

l was reading in one of European Magazines few month ago that new 9G transmission is designed to have small electric motor already built in, it should make Start/stop more pleasant and prevent engine from starting of you only want to move few feet forward in traffic. It sounds like a good idea but at this point even 9G is just a speculation. I'm getting tired waking up every morning and runing to a computer hopping to finally see a real thing:)

7G+ became standard for just a short while, personally i believe 9G would debut on w222 FL

I have a feeling that Chrysler will have 9-speed before Mercedes will and by the time Mercedes gets it - it will be yesterdays news.

This "who makes more gears" reminds me of dumb megapixel race.

I had 4 gears on my old 500sel and no complaints at all.... And i never had any problems with it, whereas i hear complains on 7g tronic even on new cars all the time.
No doubt that more gears affect reliability.

In 20 years Schwinn will be making the transmissions for our cars.

How many more gears do we really need. At this point, it's a marketing gimmick probably. The 7G took years for them to get the quirks out, and I can imagine a 9 speeds complexities would make pre-owned Mercs depreciate even faster due to the fact that people will be scared sh!tless of all those (expensive) complexities failing.

I hate to say it, maybe Mercedes should source its automatic transmissions from ZF, at least those for longitudinal application (i.e. for all V6, V8, and V12 engined rear-wheel driven models). But pride (and to lesser degree necessity) and union issues get in the way. But there are hopes that the Mercedes 9-speeder with an integrated start-stop and hybrid will be better than anything ZF has to offer.

Yeah, but everybody has the same tranny nowadays (ZF), it's kind of nice to have a Mercedes-exclusive 7G in our cars. It may or may not be the superior product, but it has its own characteristics and is fully "Mercedes" in how it operates. Things like that are important to me as well, of course as long as the tranny performs up to par as well.

Lol you're kidding right KA. If ZF continually and consistently makes better transmissions than Benz, then ofcourse they should adopt ZF.

I hope the 9G sets a new benchmark in refinement.

It's looking good! Hopefully it will be revealed next week. I'm guessing this is somewhere in the Southwest as these are U.S. spec models.
