it seems like Mercedes is doing this, this time around with the GL which has the same body frame but a complete design overhaul, the same goes for the W205 when it debuts, the S class is going to do the same thing by retaining the body frame but scrapping everything else and redesigning it, which is fine with me because i love the W221 body frame as well as the W204 body frame (which is the best C class body frame ever made) they did a damn good job with the GL so we shouldn't have any worriesThis looks more like a mid-life update. Perhaps they are still hiding the real thing is this is simply a mule, IDK..
That is pretty much the way all new cars are now. Very few are ground-up re-designs. I read years ago that the W221 would be the last total redesign for a while. Meaning as long as the current platform/bones are viable they'll keep using it. Thing is with German cars they damn near re-design the car anyway. The new GL is a stunning example. They corrected all the faults and kept the good stuff from the prevous model.

Are the SLS and SL ground up designed ?
The SLS yes, the SL IMO has only been totally re-designed from the group up when the R129 came out, clearly the R129 was light years ahead of the previous generation. NO way that was the same platform. Then when the R230 came out. It was nothing like the R129 in a lot of ways, both good and bad. The R231 I'd bet is a serious overhall of the R230 and I mean serious. I sat in a new SL550 yesterday, OMG the car screams quality in a way no other Mercedes does right now.

I think the SL is completely new, Mercedes were very proud of the chasis technology and the use of aluminum
New A and B class are completely new, also.
Regards!
Better than SLS AMG ?
To me yes. It is so plush and comfortable and the materials are just ridiculous.
M
Then I wish the SLC AMG will be like it. By the way did the asymmetrical dash disturb you ? When I drive my sisters S Class (W140) the asymmetrical dash does disturb me.
The S600 is one of the best rides in the world and its only five.
Are the SLS and SL ground up designed ?
Hmm not sure SLS.. new model, yes, but coming from Dodge Viper DNA..The SLS yes, the SL IMO has only been totally re-designed from the group up when the R129 came out, clearly the R129 was light years ahead of the previous generation. Where is the gear selector in the interior picture above?

The new 991 911 is a good example of a total redesign. Hell I didn't even know the 997 was based on the same bones as the awful 996, and neither would 99% of buyers either unless they read it somewhere.
I think people would be better off not worrying about whats underneath reguarding whether or not its all new or not and just judge the finished product, especially with German cars.

Guess kind of like the current SL even though they have extensively changed the parts/materials but its DNA remains an R230 with a different face.It IS based on the 996, and it is extensively new.... basically a hugely extensive facelift. 991 is obviously all all new.
