Mind, the new stereo camera will also be available in other models, and to other OEMs.
Daimler fits stereo cameras to new Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Semi-autonomous steering now possible

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class should set a new benchmark in safety when Daimler launches the luxury sedan in 2013. An array of camera and radar sensors plus advanced data fusion algorithms enable functions such such as pedestrian detection and semi-autonomous steering.
Daimler's head of research, Dr Thomas Weber, said: “The intelligent assistance systems of the future will be able to analyse complex situations and recognise potential dangers out on the road with the aid of improved environment sensor systems even more accurately than today.”
One of the most important developments is the introduction of stereo camera technology. Fitted behind the windscreen, it has a 45° opening angle and provides a 3D view of the road ahead out to 50m: it can detect and classify objects and pedestrians, and give their range and determine their trajectory.
The camera has a total range of 500m, and also performs the usual functions such as road sign and road marking recognition. Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection is possible at up to 72km/h. The stereo camera also enables an advanced steering function. The electric power steering system – used for the first time in the S-Class – is networked to the stereo camera and can help the driver stay in the centre of the lane – even in bends.
At slow speeds, such as in heavy traffic, the system can use the vehicle ahead to orient itself if road markings are not visible. The function always deactivates if the driver's hands leave the wheel.
