Most new models of Mercedes-Benz are complete redesigns (despite some basic components like gearbox and engine)- the chassis, body, electronics and mechanics are not compatible between W220->221, 211->212, 203->204 although the module approach starts with parts used in various classes within the same generation (e.g. 204->212).Don't believe me? Try ordering a spare part for chassis, body or electronics that fits into W220 AND W221 or W211 AND W212 - you won't find many. The internal number is erratic

Some manufacturers use a different approach, like Porsche with a longer product cycle but invasive facelifts (996>997 or 986->987) or many Japanese manufacturers.
 
IMO that grille is way too nondescript in shape and made be simply HUGE for the sake of huge. Was expecting more there with the stunning character shapes of the W211 facelift/W212/W221 facelift grilles before it.
 
That grille looks weird. It gives the car, at least with the camo on, kind of a bug look.
 
Grille might be inspired by Ocean Drive Concept -- NAIAS 2007? ;)

Not sure what the MB love is for these massive headlamps.
Front bumper is very interesting, just don't think it goes with the S-class. The S has always had very simple design. Even the ocean drive is very classic and tasteful. This has all kinds of shapes and sculpting and doesn't seem to fit the overall aesthetic of the car.
 
The grille is more dulled around the edges than either of those. Those have that cool aggressive pointed look like the W212/W211 facelift and W221 facelift. The W222 grille looks flat bottomed and very rounded, more like the W220 era.
 
Yeah the grille is definintly inspired by the F700 they're almost identical, i'm glad thats all they took from the F700 (exterior wise)
 
No, it´s inspired by the F700:

F700 has only 3 horizontal slats and no raised border around the inner grille edge. ;)

Here comes the new version of the biggest Benz, the 2013 S-class. These new photos reveal more of the limo's sheet metal, as engineers strip away disguise for their hot weather tests.
What's the latest on the 2013 Mercedes S-class?

The front end is beginning to appear: note that finely-louvered grille in the front bumper, and the bejewelled headlamps. Those lights will feature Merc's new 'Magic Light Control' system, which uses adaptive LEDs to illuminate the route ahead, even helping the driver peer around corners, while not dazzling oncoming cars.
The shape of that C-pillar is interesting, too. Its curvature, and the angle of the bootlid, appear to have a bit more of the CL and CLS-look than today's monolithic profile.
Surely the 2013 Mercedes S-class is set to be a tech-fest?

Oh yes indeed. This S-class has more magic than the lovechild of Paul Daniels and David Copperfield, with features such as 'Magic Body Control'. This system uses cameras and sensors in the car's nose to monitor the road ahead for bumps, and then vary the damping rate accordingly. So, if you spot a gnarly pothole in your path, there's no need to flinch and wait for the inevitable, bone-shuddering thunk. Allow the S-class to notice the crater and adjust itself, leaving you to simply continue wafting along.
The big S borrows a trick from the SLK too, with 'Magic Sky Control' - essentially a glass roof panel with a variable tint controlled by occupants. Disappointingly, given the enticing name, it doesn't allow UK buyers to tailor the weather.
Any more tricks up its sleeve?

Mercedes always makes a safety statement with its flagships, so the new S will feature the latest in emergency braking and radar-guided cruise control. The standard wheelbase model arrives first in 2013, with a stretched version following soon after.
The S-class is the latest in a run of exciting cars to stray into our Death Valley photographer's rangefinder: we've also seen the new Mini Cooper S and BMW X5 sweating it out in the Californian desert.

This car has been testing for the past two years and here Lexus come out of the blue and announce a new LS before Mercedes does and i'm pretty sure MB started working on the S class before Lexus did on its next gen LS, i guess you don't rush perfection
 
I really think the LS is just a facelift now, but either way just because we didn't see the LS doesn't mean Mercedes started first lol.

I doubt that's the case as Japanese automakers usually test their vehicles strictly in Japan until the FEP phase and are very secretive compared to other automakers. Unless TMG or TMS is involved, usually you won't see a vehicle in testing. Only if it's a non-JDM spec variant you might. The W222 started development in 2006 after it's predecessor went on sale in late 2005. The LS started development in 2007 and the design would've been frozen in 2010. Both companies start next-gen development the calendar year following the current models' introduction, but in this case I believe the S-Class will bring more to the table as it took longer to develop at 6-7 years vs 5 years for the LS.

Mercedes introduces Seatbelt-airbag on an ''more expensive'' model.
The article says that it was impossible to test the beltbag on the current crash test dummy's, but I think it's kinda bullocks otherwise people might have wanted proof that it really works and thus showing a crash test of the new S-class which still is secret.

The article is written in Dutch!
 
In terms of exterior design, the W222 S-Class represents an evolution of M-Bs' current styling theme. Perhaps the CL replacement based on the W222 will be a bit more adventurous. The actual "revolution" will, however, be seen on the C-Class/E-Class + derivatives successors.
