Journalist and designer, Didier has occupied a special place in the automotive press for ten years, since he is one of the few to know how to handle both the pen and the graphic palette. Passionate about the history of the automobile and bodywork, this original Lyonnais graduated in design car credits ESDI. He has held various internships at Heuliez (2002-2003) and Peugeot (2001). His work has focused on the Opel Tigra TwinTop, the Nissan Micra C + C, the Peugeot 207 and the RC Pique and RC Carreaux concept cars. In 2004, he made an impressive entry in the automotive press, first at the Auto-Journal, then at Auto Concept and finally at L'argus from 2006, where he takes care of the new products.

Ach so...

Contrary to information from a few German automotive press sources, the A8 will be presented prior to the A7 after all.

I like how Audi does this. Instead of keeping car fans guess how the new car will look, they just went straight to draw the sketches of their 3 models.
Once the bastions of Teutonic modern design. Audi have been receiving a lot of criticism especially in design. The latest models are not entirely cohesive and in some cases ideas do not appear well in reality as they did on paper.

It's about time anyway, as shouldn't this have debuted in Paris originally? I'm glad all of us are aware here that the Prologue came after that the D5 and C8s (A6/A7) and it didn't somehow influence the production cars, as it irks me when I read otherwise.

I really do not see much of a stylistic move forward, like Lichte claimed. If I recall, design work was reaching a close by the second half of 2013. Wasn't Wolfgang Egger still heading Audi Design?

I get the impression that Marc Lichte did work on the exterior for the D5 during 2013, but by the time he took over in December, he only had about 2 months before D5 approval in February 2014. What gives then?

Did he mostly work on this car as an exterior designer under Egger, hence a closeness to the Q7 due to directives from Egger. Does any think I am right or that I'm wrong?

Wow, what a fight. It's that serious really?

Obviously, the angle of the camera(s) on several spyshots may have corrupted the respective genuine proportions of Audis' soon-to-be-introduced C and D segment successors. Arguably a reason for what seems to be a difficult to define "neither here nor there" consensus.

In any event, these cars will be immensely important in terms of restoring the admittedly waning "MUST HAVE" factor. I must say: When viewing M-Bs' most recent spyshots (CLS(E) and AMGs' 4 door GT), I can only suspect that Audi has a very difficult task at hand.

Save the date: New Audi A8 to be revealed on July 11 in Barcelona

The reveal date is officially official.
It would be the understatement of the week to say the third-generation Audi A8 (D4) is getting a little long in the tooth considering it has been on sale since late 2009, but thankfully an all-new model is less than four months away. Speaking at the Annual Press Conference 2017, Audi’s chairman Rupert Stadler revealed the flagship model is going to be introduced on July 11 at the first Audi Summit in Barcelona, Spain.

Billed as being a “high-end sedan,” the company’s overhauled range topper is going to feature a “completely new operating concept — generously dimensioned and intuitive.” The car will boast the most advanced autonomous driving system to come from Ingolstadt, but the entire functionality it will not be available from day one because the current legislation is not ready for it. Rupert Stadler has made the promise that “as soon as legislation is passed in our core markets allowing highly automated driving on the highway, and when that is legally safe, we will offer the new key technology in the A8.”

As far as the design is concerned, “evolutionary” would have to be the most suitable word to use. Numerous spy shots and an official sketch released earlier this week have shown Audi will once again play it safe with the exterior styling. More significant changes will occur inside the cabin where the all-new A8 will be the first car to take advantage of the second-generation Audi Virtual Cockpit, which is the company’s fancy way of referring to its all-digital instrument cluster. In addition, the fullsize premium sedan will boast the MIB2+ (Modular Infotainment Platform) powered by Nvidia’s Tegra K1 processo. Not only that, but it will also have Audi’s most advanced traffic jam pilot to date smart enough to “take over full control at times.”

Underpinned by the MLB Evo platform, the 2018 A8 is expected to shave off a considerable amount of weight even though it will likely be a tad bigger. The VW Group’s biturbo W12 6.0-liter will be offered, but it’s too soon to say whether it will have the same output as it does in the Bentley Bentayga: 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 664 pound-feet (900 Newton-meters).

The performance-oriented S8 has already been spotted testing and is likely set to get a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 shared with the Porsche Panamera Turbo where it pumps out 550 hp (404 kW) and 567 lb-ft (770 Nm).

With the VW Group’s green push, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume a plug-in hybrid version is being prepared and it might be available from day one. It will be interesting to see whether the SQ7’s 4.0-liter V8 TDI engine featuring an electric powered compressor will find its way underneath the A8’s hood. If it will, expect output to be similar or identical to the 429 hp (320 kW) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) available in the hot diesel-powered SUV.

Following its world debut in July, the new Audi A8 will travel to the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and should go on sale before the year’s end.

I'm not impressed. The A6 and A8 differ too little from the current generation. And while the A7 does look quite different, it still looks too much like the other models. Seems like Lichte failed what he came for.

Lichte Lays Out the Future of Audi Design

Ever since Marc Lichte took over design duties at Audi he’s been promising an end to the Russian doll school of design, wherein all Audis look the same except bigger or smaller. In an interview with French outlet L’argus, Lichte went over some of the finer points of his design vision.

The change, he says, will be evolutionary, not revolutionary. Lichte admits that he will be leaning heavily on the work of Walter de Silva, whose single frame grille will anchor new designs to Audi’s past.

“I will propose the third evolution with more sportiness,” Lichte told L’argus.

As has been previously noted, Audi is moving to a hexagonal grille for its sedans and an octagonal grille for its SUVs. That doesn’t mean that all sedans will look the same, though.

The A8, for example, will have a taller grille, richly highlighted with chrome to suggest pride and power. The A7, meanwhile, will have a thinner grille without any chrome. That, says Lichte, shows off the A7’s sporting nature and aggression.

Finally, the A6’s grille will be somewhere in the middle, with a thin chrome highlight and less aggressive angles.

Out back, meanwhile, the A8 and A6 will get more chrome, while the A7 remains unornamented. Like the Q8, the A8 will also get a light bar, signifying their positions at the top of the Audi hierarchy.

The differences are all subtle enough that you could be forgiven for missing them, but they also quietly work in unity to suggest things about the rest of the car’s nature. Fortunately, regardless of how identical or not these Audis are, they are at least handsome.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
