SLK/SLC-Class (R172) [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK / SLC R172 facelift

The Mercedes-Benz R172 is the third generation SLK-Class (SLC-Class) launched in 2011. It is the successor to the R171. Production: 2011–2020.
Some 107 SLC racing history. Won the 1979 Bandama 1, 2, 3, 4. Hopefully inspires the new one? :)

2016 Mercedes SLC spied, will replace the SLK
The 2016 Mercedes SLC has been spied undergoing testing in Europe.

Essentially a facelifted and renamed SLK, the SLC features a familiar appearance but adopts a new front bumper, a revised grille and restyled headlights. We can also see restyled taillights which will likely be joined by a new rear bumper and a modified exhaust system.

Mercedes-Benz SLC spied on a rainy day
Will replace the SLK
A thinly camouflaged prototype of the Mercedes-Benz SLC has been spied undergoing testing on a rainy day.

Mercedes-Benz's new nomenclature has already affected a few models and there's one more on the way as the SLK facelift will be sold with the SLC moniker to denote the roadster is similar in size with the C-Class. The current generation R172 was introduced more than four years ago at the Geneva Motor Show so naturally time has come for a nip and tuck as part of the mid-life cycle refresh.

Don't hold your breath for significant changes as the camouflage fitted onto this prototype indicates the revisions will be modest, with some updates for the bumpers and fresh graphics for the headlights and taillights.

The biggest problem for me on this car has always been the size of the taillights. Unfort there doesn't seem like a lot they can do there other than chance the graphics.

The name SLC is not fit for this car. In the past the 107 SLC was a variant of the S class based 2+2 coupe. Now since Mercedes is making its first letter more in line with the class based e.g. G for the SUV and S for the S class based models, this mini roadster should be called CLC or something starting with C rather than S.

The only attractive SLK was the first generation model designed under the guidance of the legendary Mr. Bruno Sacco. Future models have been on the ugly side especially compared to the first generation. The facelift will not bring anything new to the current model other than the headlight shapes in line with the A Class, S Class and GLE in my opinion and still be unattractive.

I really don't mind it. The SLC only existed in the R107 generation decades ago so its not like the name can't be reused; it doesn't have heavy enough recognition to cause problems. I also welcome new powertrain options and a softer front end.

Interesting. That's not something that ever bothered me. I thought the blocky front end was the biggest demerit. I'm glad it's being softened.

Mercedes-Benz SLK gets new engines and transmissions
New standard equipment

Mercedes-Bez has introduced new engines and transmissions for the SLK roadster.

The engine range starts with the SLK 200, which has 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 184 HP (135 kW) and 300 Nm (222 lb-ft) – 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) more than before. The SLK 300 replaces the SLK 250 and comes with 245 HP (180 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) .

More importantly, the SKL 300 will benefit from a new 6-speed manual transmission which offers “a high level of gearshift comfort and precise travel”. Both the SLK 300 and SLK 250d with 204 HP (150 kW) and 500 Nm (372 lb-ft) receive a new nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox as standard.

The SLK series also features new standard equipment, including LED daytime running lights and new multimedia system. The range of safety systems consists of the Attention Assist, Distronic Plus with Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Adaptive Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist systems and more.

Good news and interesting that would do that before the facelift. Now the SLK350 needs to go away and be replaced by the SLC400. SLC63 should replace the SLK55 to. 9G for the SLK too, that is real progress. Now bring on the facelift.

Two new paints become available with the new SLK model year: Designo Cerussite Gray Magno (code 281), replacing tenorite gray metallic, and Selenite Gray Metallic (paint code 992), replacing palladium silver metallic. :)

The Mercedes-Benz SLC will become available to order starting on December 18, according to the latest information. Among others things the front and rear lights will change, with LED daytime running lights in the headlights. Optional new wheels are expected as well. In addition to new front and rear bumpers, Mercedes Connect.me will be installed. And the SLC 450 AMG may replace the SLK 55 AMG according to some rumors emanating from MB Passion. :)

No more pocket-rocket SLK? Sad news...

Why is Palladium Silver being phased out? Seems like S Class too cannot be ordered with that color any more.

Suspect tenorite gray metallic might be too close? Here's a comparo from Motortalk. :)

Mercedes-Benz SLC available on order starting December; deliveries begin March 2016

Could debut at Frankfurt Motor Show
German media is reporting the Mercedes-Benz SLC (SLK facelift) will be available on order in December this year.

The name change might tempt you to believe this is an all-new model but in reality it's just a mild makeover for the current SLK. The attached spy photos and video show we should expect some redesigned bumpers and revised LED headlight and taillights while the interior cabin will probably get some fresh upholsteries, trims and additional accent detailing. Mercedes-Benz's latest infotainment system and an upgraded array of safety and assistance systems will also be part of the mid-cycle refresh.

In the engine department, most of the units will likely be carried over from the current SLK but expect to see a new twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter powering an AMG Sport version where it will probably develop 367 PS (270 kW) and 517 Nm (382 lb-ft) of torque. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG SLC 63 will likely use a twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter with 476 PS and 510 PS in the S version.

Since order books are believed to open in December, chances are Mercedes-Benz will reveal the SLC in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The report goes on to specify deliveries are going to kick off in March 2016.
