E-Class W213 [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213)

The W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the fifth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold from 2016 as a 2017 model. It succeeded the W212/S212 E-Class models. The coupe/convertible models share the same platform as the sedan/wagon, in contrast to the previous generation. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG E63 and E63S versions of the W213 have been available as well from 2016 (as a 2017 model), and these are the only versions with V8 engines.
I, too, was hoping for the I6 right out the gates. I love the proportions though.

MB always keeps development time lines for powertrain and new vehicles separate. They are very reluctant to deal with both engine and product change at the same time, and with few exceptions have sticked to that dogma.

For a time, the S-class usually would introduce powertrain architecture when a new generation S-class debuts and it would trickle its way down to other "lesser" M-B's during their mid-life cycle. Now, it's not like that so much.

There are some elements of s class coupe around the airvent area

That cheap hood shutline ruins the whole car pretty much.

I tend to agree. I just hope they get the fit and finish done properly, so that the body panel gaps are small and even (and would pass Ferdinand Piëch's credit card check :)

In the past, MB hasn't always gotten this topic right, partly due to design, partly due to manufacturing tolerances. The low point was the W203/211 generation, where you even had multiple official MB press photos with ill fitted hoods...

I have to admit that I am worried about the E losing it's identity here. It looks like it will be a mesh of the C and S (inside and out) instead of it's own unique design like it has always been. I have no doubt it will be a gorgeous car considering all the hits Mercedes has been putting out, but the E should stand on it's own. The C and S have always played the look alike game, but the E has always stood apart. Why stop that now? That interior is going to blow out the segment like the C did, but does it have to look just like the S?

Not really,I don't think your beloved W124 E was very different from the W140 S and W202 C..In fact far from got it's own character..It's obvious that MB is going back to that era with this generation C,E and S.

Wrong years. The W210 changed the look completely just a few years later. There will always be overlap of course, but my point stands. The W124 only shared the floor with the W140 and W202 for 3-4 years before it stood out completely again.

You could argue that Wagener pursues a similarly strong family identity theme as Bruno Sacco did

Non-AMG W213 caught testing on the Nürburgring about a week ago.

The 213s strength over the 205, in terms of appearance, is, among other things, refinement and proportions, IMO.

The E class is a more upmarket car, certainly in Asia, where big is better.

Let's hope Mercedes introduce the new straight six engines from start of production as then this car will be the same as the W124 which introduced the new 3.0 straight six from start of production in '85.
Rumor has it, the I6 diesels will be there from the start.
