The iX's floating roof (half-floating) originates from the 2013 i3, which in turn derives from the fully floating roof that MINI popularized in 2000.

I was referring mainly to the innovation in exterior design, especially the important details; the interior layout has also been copied countless times.

What details though, that’s what I’m wondering. And who has copied BMWs interiors recently? I gave examples of what BMWs been copying from others I’m struggling to come up with stuff they’ve done recently that’s been copied.
The floating roof mentioned in the iX and i3 is present in half of Chinese models, the shapes that give personality to the bodywork, the small details on the bumpers, the body creases, the shapes of the front and hood in relation to the windshield giving the design a strong presence—if you investigate, you'll find that the brand's developments over the years have influenced many models of other brands. For example, flame surfacing has evolved in one way or another to become the standard for lots of brands today, and BMW isn't the only one. Mercedes and Audi (among others) have also set the standard in many aspects for the rest of the industry.
I don’t see anyone copying BMWs modern bodywork or creases though. None of this stuff I see on other cars have been copied from recent BMWs.
