Defender [Renders] 2019 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender (initially introduced as the Land Rover One Ten, and in 1984 joined by the Land Rover Ninety, plus the new, extra-length Land Rover One Two Seven in 1985) is a series of British off-road cars and pickup trucks. They consistently have four-wheel drive, and were developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948.

I want to hate this car, but at the same time I want to love it. I really hope this car appeals to the core defender demographic not just the trendies that want buy in to something genuinely respectable to lend their fake image some kind of credence.

It will be the car(nee SUV) to have in 2020.

My dream garage:

Suzuki Jimny
G63 AMG
2020 Defender

They say variety is the spice of life.... ;)

This new Defender looks alright, but I get more a Discovery vibe than a Defender vibe.

I'll say this, the folks at M-B did a bang-up job with the new G and being able to maintain that sense of G-wagenness. I think anything otherwise would be construed as a failure. I hope the new Defender is able to thread that needle.

Mercedes appropriately just gave the G a heavy facelift and it looks amazing.

Land rover on the other hand are reinterpreting the Defender.

Personally I am not at all worried about it. There will be basic SE versions, posh Vogue ones and all singing all dancing autobiography variants.

I expect it to be a very likable car.

I expect it to be anything but the authentic Defender I've spent most of my thousands of off-road miles in. This'll just be a squared off Disco with none of the utilitarian simplicity and true ruggedness of the original Land Rover ethos.
I laugh at Discos in the traffic - they look preposterous with their narrow track-to-height ratios and soft styling. I'd tell people to hang on to their Disco 4's for dear life but unfortunately they're due to pop an ageing Ford-PSA V6's turbo and come sagging down on their air springs.

Where to from here for us types looking for a hardy but still plush-enough off-roader for daily use? We wait for the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with baited breath (whilst turning blue at the same time).

Yes as I spoke about this in the past year they are going to "Range Rover" the shit out of The Defender for a more affluent customer where it will be trendy to have one.
Hence the Fisher Price sized switchgear.

If you want rough offroader import Uaz Hunter from Russia.

I am glad that Defender gets this treatment, old one was too long on market and it was expensive when you consider what you get. Also their improvements were very modest, contrary to G class and Wrangler. I wouldnt buy that previous Defender as long as there is Jeep Wrangler. G class is more expensive, ofcourse I would buy that one rather than those two :D

But then again, the Defender is a tool and not a SUV. There are very few cars that are suitable for working in heavy conditions and to be somehow affordable. The absolute leader in this field is Toyota Hilux, but the defender is considered a higher class and used by higher level workforce. These cars are used mainly in first and second gear and are wrote off after less than 100 000 km.

Both Wrangler and G class are tools and they still got nice interiors and newer tech.

Mercedes Arocs is also a tool and it has interior like this:

Btw I think that parts price for Land cruisers (90 Prado) were cheaper than for Defender?

The G class is not a preferable tool, because it is too expensive. The Wrangler doesn't have a suitable diesel engine to allow it to be driven primary in first gear without having to tow a fuel tank with it.

Regarding the Land Cruiser, I would advise against holding one's breath. Rumors point to a V6 hybrid set-up with no available V8 for the whole-hog LC. The Prado? Probably similar if not the same.

The matte texture of the various surfaces and the seemingly empty engine bay make it look like a mock-up model, yet everything seems to match so it doesn't matter.

I had a feeling the styling details might let me down. Oh well, need to wait for the whole thing.

I have nothing against new design but I am "worried" about attack angle and ground clearance.

That's the part I wouldn't be worried about. The air suspension is going to have plenty of travel and the overhangs are clearly very short.

JLR rarely suffer leaks but with the Defender the temptation for those close to it is too high.

I like it. The flared wheel arches, deep recess of the headlights within its cluster and front windshield keeps the retro spirit alive.

If there's a car manufacturers who's exceptional at evolving their SUV designs, it's JRL. I cannot wait to see the full car.

The waiting list will be looooong.

Looking too much like a Disco 3 or Disco 4, but still is attractive although its totally different to the original Defender. I honestly think it would have looked better if they went retro and then put it on a new platform. Then the waiting list would be 10years long LOL
