Defender [Renders] 2019 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender (initially introduced as the Land Rover One Ten, and in 1984 joined by the Land Rover Ninety, plus the new, extra-length Land Rover One Two Seven in 1985) is a series of British off-road cars and pickup trucks. They consistently have four-wheel drive, and were developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948.

JLR has suffered a huge leak from an internal meeting and extensive details about the car is now out.

The bigget surprise is the Defender 130 which can be specced with up to 8 seats. It's clear that the Defender will be a line of cars with extensive personalisation depending on whether practicality, utility or outright luxury is your biggest priority. It's going to be an extremly fun car to spec.

Test mules are now wearing limited cladding and I foresee the flared waist line making it indistinguishable.

Unexpected but unavoidable leak. However it difficult to guage the full appearance as its dirty and is in stealth black.

Other than that is looks unmistakably like a modernised defender.

For me, not a chance in hell it looks anything close to a modernised Defender. This new monocoque body design has nothing iconic about it. For comparative cases in point see the Wrangler and G-Wagen as exemplars of progressive iterations being thoroughly modernised while retaining their core identities.

The difference lies in Mercedes and Jeep having the wherewithal to invest in a bespoke platform for their respective niche models, preserving their heritage while retaining specific underpinning characteristics.

Land Rover does not have this ability at their disposal. They've been building off the same old (they will claim constantly evolving) aluminium-intensive platform for over a decade now and reskinning to suit. And it's started to show that one size actually doesn't fit all.

If the new generation Discovery is a barely passable succession of a far more ruggedly desirable bloodline, this new Defender doesn't have an iota of the key attributes vital for a credible Land Rover Defender replacement.

I think it looks like a great Discovery replacement. The actual Discovery looks like a refrigerator turned on its side so this is welcome.

The G-Class has a legacy as an uncompromising off-roads. Those capabilities remain however it's primary identity is a lifestyle vehicle. Unlike for the Defender, there isn't even a barebone G-Class variant for utility seekers. It's either a 911 priced 350d or nothing.

I have driven behind one in bumper to bumper traffic and it was like sitting on the floor looking up at your fridge.

The new one looks nothing like the original, I think it is more like the older Discovery.

Land Rover should have just modernized it a little like this maybe. New underbody with modern LED lights.

If you’ve ever driven an old defender they really horrible agricultural devices, they are also incredibly cramped in the front, my brother has a 110 Stationwagon, it’s a horrible thing IMO, lucky for him he’s nearly manlet sized so can fit behind the wheel.

The G wagon has also abandoned its commercial/military origins, the new one is far to expensive to use as a commercial vehicle these days. Most of them will never leave the pavement unless they are in the Middle East and there owners go dune bashing in them.

My one friends dad had a 110 Wagon and a number of times I sat as a passenger in the car when he drove us around, from what I can remember it had a very hard and bouncy ride and the engine was really noisy. Like KiwiRob said it was very agriculture like. The main thing that was impressive was the way it drove offroad, it could go down 45deg slopes and really rough terrain without getting stuck. The looks are also very rugged and they have a huge reputation having been iconic cause of the Camel Adventure cross country races.

Ohh! So it's going to drive down that steep ramp for its debut?

Can't wait to see it. Wonder if they will bring the Bond specification? Kind of like they done for IAA 2015 with the Range Rover SVR seen in Spectre?
