CLS [Renders] 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS (gen 3)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
What the hell Wagener was thinking when he approved this design???

I am now start thinking that gorgeous W222 was just a happy coincidence and Mercedes should say Gorden goodbye until it's too late.

I am really concerned about Benz future design. We already know that A-class gonna be ugly as well. What about GLE and GLS?

^^^ And this comes from a Mercedes-Benz fan.

Personally, I share the same cloudy perspective over the future of Mercedes-Benz design.

Truth hurts. Sometimes. All the times...

It was, and they seemingly were unable to design anything new since the W222. Same old design every time, doesn’t matter the car.
So they ruined the W222 too because every Benz is a copy of it and there is nothing special left.

And the saddest part? Next gen will be exactly the same, as we can already see with the next A class and CLS. A slight change in design, spread over all new upcoming models.
God, I hope I am wrong with that!

Perhaps, but looking at the recent concept cars by Wagener, it shows that he has the talent to design great looking Mercedes, lets just hope these design elements translate to the production cars in the future.

Wowzers! Color me disappointed. After years of talking about 'sensual purity' they go and release this monstrosity? The front and rear seemed to have been designed by two very different design teams and the center of the car is a hodgepodge of smooth (upper body) and sharp (lower door panels) panels. And cost-cutting is evident all across the interior with the copy/paste job.

Audi wins the battle with this generation.

I can't say I like it. Sadly, I feel very alienated by all recent MB designs. I don't want fashion-statement-Mercedes. I want built-like-a-talk-look-like-a-tank Mercedes back.

That's a car for somebody who drinks vodka cranberry. I want a Merc for someone who drinks raki shots with his breakfast sausages.

Pfft...

...even this woman is not impressed with M-Bs' new "sedoupe":

"Mein Gott ! This is even LESS impressive than my attempts to form a government."

IMO, the "sensual purity" theme can work well on shallow, high wheelarched/flush fitting larger diameter wheels, lower 2/3s' (flanks under the side glass sills) side profiles (M-B Vision IAA 2015, Maybach Concept 6, AMG GT, for example). But on more conventional cars, a more defined (than on the new CLS or C238 E-Class 2 doors) shoulderline crease may help diminish the impression of "excessive vertical flank mass", leading to a more svelte, sinewy appearance. Audi does this very effectively on its' new A7. BMW also has this down relatively pat as well.

Agreed. Taking away the side crease has proven to be idiotic.

This discussion turned upside down. Some australian website accidently "leaked" photos of the C257, yet you guys are all arguing about the design. Wait for the official pics.

BTW matt grey looks horrible on sedans/pseudo-coupes.

I just saw the leaked images on Carscoop and I thought I'd be in the minority with my feeling of ambivalence. I got to say, I am actually surprised by people's initial reaction.

The original CLS, when conceived, was a bit of a shock. It abandoned much of the staidness that was incorporated in then MB's design of 3-box sedans for something more sensual and even a bit more avant-garde. (Though it could be argued that the W211's and the W220's design were not exactly staid by MB standards.)

While it's difficult to replicate that lightning-in-a-bottle moment for what is now an established model line, you'd think the design team would have the liberty to be more daring. Looking at it, I can't say they had that kind of latitude. There's a possibility that a less monochromatic scheme might change my mind, but I am actually preferring the E-class over this. And I am not talking about the E coupe but the sedan.

I don't hate it, but I just feel nothing. And for something that should elicit some emotion, this design is coming off as a failure.

I am curious to see how i feel about it in the long-run. Maybe this design will have better staying power than its predecessor. I initially liked the 2nd gen CLS, but grew wary of some the design elements.

One of the big things this car has going for it is the availibility of what sounds like an absolute peach of an engine with the inline-six. That, to me, is its biggest selling point.

Vision Tokyo was ugly (and I see its design clues in the new CLS), Concept EQ was ugly. Only Maybach concepts were nice. But when it comes to "luxury" cars, Cadillac's concepts turn out to be waaaaay better. Escala or Elmiraj for exmple.

AMG GT concept was nice. But it was nice for CLS. Now I know that it was 4 door AMG GT, but to be a Panamera rival there must be something more special, I think.

MY right to MY opinion is fundamental, so, if you say what you are saying above, you should be the one keeping his mouth shut.

Only communists thought their ideas were the brightest ones and no one else from the crowd was allowed to voice his contrary opinion.

Period.
Who stopped you ? keep on voicing your opinion so your rights don't get hurt. So you can have a dump without constipation.. No one is taking your freedom away.
I just feel its rich when BMW fans talk design when everything they made is a evolution of the e65 7er.

I like this design but feel that it's not anything special. You all will see tomorrow that it looks better in various other colors. It's not as much of a statement piece as the Audi A7 but it's got its own classy look in my opinion.
