M5 [Official] The BMW Concept M5

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

Is there a reason why, just like with the previous M5 concept, that the mirrors are developed last? I haven't seen any spy pics showing the mirrors on the car. Why is this seem to be the last thing to be done?

Maybe that was the case with earlier M5 Concepts, but now it's more about holding back some bits for the release of the production car. Late M5 prototypes in FEP stage show the final mirrors which seem to be a evolution of the E60 M5 mirrors.

South, I didn't realize those were M mirrors on the car. I thought they were regular 5er mirrors. Interesting.

Yea, it's not too much of a difference. Not bad. I guess we were expecting too much. Should be a winner.

Who is "we"? Not me, at least. The thing is been running around with light camo for months now, not to mention more chops of it than Jesus - some of them pretty spot on. There is nothing really unknown about this car. Not even the specs. The last mystery was the type of transmission, even that was put to rest few weeks ago. The only thing really left to look forward to is the actual reviews and driving impression.

I am slightly disapointed but think it may change when I'll see it live. I think it is Frozen Grey that makes it look so bad. I never was a fan of Frozen Grey. M3 Concept also did not look nice. Anyway, I hope M6 will look better than this M5.

Still shocked that people are so stuck on the design of the new M5 vs. a 5 Series M Sport, or even on the design in general.

The car is more than just the front or rear bumpers, or other M specific design cues. I would be more concerned how the car handles itself, if the dynamics improved, how is the new engine responding, any turbo lag...etc...

I always say that an M is more than just looks and if you want just looks, take a 5 series and with less than $20k, you can turn it into an M-looking vehicle.

I saw the car last Friday, it looked great, it looked exactly as I expected, wasn't a design that I can say it will blow my mind away, but I wasn't interested just in that.

Bottom line: it looks exactly how it should be!

The more I see it the more I love it. This M5 is aggressive enough without being vulgar which is a good thing when the car is still something that's mainly purchased by professional types.

A very good looking car.

This isn't Frozen Grey, it's Chrome Shadow.

Yeah, I was about to say.... The ones on the concept look rather lifeless and dull. It`s the only thing I don`t like about it.

Agreed. The skirts are way too lifeless and bland. Don't need anything crazy, but maybe a little bit more subtle and tastefully dynamic pizazz. I never realized how bland the F10's side skirts are until noticing them kind of sticking out on the M5.

I really think on the road, with the non-black rims, this car is gonna be a stunner in real life. Simple elegance with the understatedly added flair of the changed up aesthetic elements. Adding too much busy-work and flair onto such a simply elegant body like the F10 would be an oxymoron, and look foolish.

As stated before, I really like this. It's not over the top. It's elegant with the right amount of aggression without looking too steroidal or cartoonish. It has presence that commands respect, as an exec car ought to. I feel if they added anything more to it, it may come off too boy-racer looking. I find it interesting that there is a noticeable amount of backlash with this kind of transition into the M5. Not to start an MB vs. BMW with this post, but to me, the transition from the mainstream E-class into the AMG E63 was more subtle compared to this M5. Yet there wasn't that much criticism when the W212 E63 was released.

It is in my opinion, that is may be the best looking BMW sedan in the last 10 or so years. It's nothing surprising about it, but it's hard to keep everything under wraps when this thing had as many spy-pics as it did.

"BMW are still calling it a 'concept car', but as we can all see by these latest pics, 2012’s M5 is looking pretty well finished - and it’s been finished pretty darn well!

Subtly wider, deeper, sharper and more aggressive than the 5-Series on which it’s based, the new 4.4-litre twin-turbo, V8-powered big-5 keeps the performance coming and the emissions dropping.

Grunt will be rosy-cheeked-healthy at around 550bhp while emissions should be shaved – thanks to extra engine efficiencies and start/stop tech – by around 25 per cent over the outgoing 5-litre, 507bhp V10-fronted car. BMW’s rear-driving, 7-speed double-clutch ‘box does the shifting business with the usual electro-assistance from variable driving modes; from almost sedate to seriously quick.

BMW will put their new M5 on public show for the first time at the Shanghai Motor Show this month, no doubt on the lookout for public interest (and orders!) in this ever-expanding luxury and performance car market.

But is the turbo-V8 a suitably loud and proud replacement for spine-tingling V10? And will new M5 owners be popping hoods to reveal V8 powerplants with as much gusto as they do for the V10-badge-of-pride? Perhaps in China they will."

Just to clarify a small something with that news article. As stated by Scott, the BMW M5 Concept will be shown at the Shanghai autoshow, not the BMW M5. Don't want another round of people moaning and groaning because of a wording technicality.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany. Official website: BMW M
