The sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class executive car is a lineup consisting of three body styles, the W214 sedan, S214 estate, and the X214 all terrain estate, which are vehicles produced by German luxury vehicle manufacturer Mercedes-Benz Group since 2 May 2023.

Six cylinders with over 400 hp feel very on edge… not a fun driving experience. Plus I worry about their longevity. I don’t think they will break 100,000 miles
Turbo 6's have been in the business now with BMW and Mercedes for close to 20 years. Who could not forget the brilliant 3.0inline 6 Turbo in the 335i E90 from 2007, it won the International Engine of the year in both 2007 and 2008. These engines are not running extremely high boost pressures and both BMW and Mercedes are thoroughly testing their engines in different extreme areas of the world to make sure they bullet proof and can run for 300,000km or more at least without major mechanical problems. The driving experience is smooth and never edgy with these engines.

Horrible rear lights

Six cylinders with over 400 hp feel very on edge…

Is this a joke? Arnoud 400 hp is basically the bare minimum for a normal 6 pot in '24.

On edge would be a B58 with 1200 hp.

So S-class like.

It's classic Mercedes. Looks like the S, but you (or I) can actually tell them apart.

Yesterday I was at my dealership. Outside on the lot, they had a sedan as well as an T-model, both in graphite grey and both in AMG trim. It was dark already, so no pictures. Both looked very, very attractive. For me the car to have in this segment.
But, although it looks rather S-like in pictures, in real life there is a clear difference between W223 and W214. Not only for nerds like us, I’m pretty sure even average Joe won’t be confused.

Yep. It’s about as color sensitive as a car can possibly be. Darker colors suit it better. In white is just grotesque.

I can concur completely. It can get away with daker colours, but it is UGLY in lighter tones. Particularly the rear lights.

I can't believe how quickly they have landed this in Australia, and they are definitely trying to get a leg up on the E-class which dominates this segment here 3 to 1. The E-class is at least 4-6 months away.

I didn't have a chance to sit in the vehicles as I was in such a rush, but I managed to get these photos. I actually took very flattering photos.

Interestingly, the salesman knows my dad has the current S. He offered us a brand new i7 at a $100K discount off the new car price ($340K down to $240K). When I said no, he inquired about family and friends that may be interested. It sounded a little desperate and this is the second time we have been offered a brand new 7 at a huge discount. The last time was a 740i.

One hundred thousend Australian Dollar... that's an almost 30% discount! To all those who only watch vloggers and other videos on internet testing the 7er, I say; Welcome to the real world.
PS to me the 5er looks ugly, no matter what colour.

Did you sit in the any comments on fit finish and quality

It’s hard to imagine MB’s fit and finish being suddenly any better. I was just reading Car Magazine’s review of the i5 and they couldn’t stop emphasizing how much better it was both quality and driving wise compared to the EQE.

So let’s hope it is for real MB has stepped up its game with the W214.

Some reviews have mentioned how the interior material quality is better in the W214.

The EQ cars are just half-assed to be quite honest.

Yup, that’s why I mention it. If we believe reviews, the W214 might be the first MB to have a better interior quality than the comparable BMW in a while.

I sat in both w214 and g60.
For the w214, The only part where there is still plastic squeak is at the meter cluster area. The soft touch(not sure if it’s leather but seems like it) material at the top of the dash board feels quite premium. Overall it looks more premium than the g60. However as the w214 is equipped with the super screen, most of the dashboard is just glass/screen.

I’ve driven the 2.9 in the RS5/ S6 and the S58 in the X4M.. they don’t feel fast, meaning that you have to be higher in the rev range to feel the torque. On the other hand any 6 cyl under 400 hp feels significantly more responsive

To be fair, I should have also noted that all my contacts at Mercedes Australia have pretty much said the EQS is a complete non event. Buyers are simply not perceiving it to be anywhere near the S in terms of design, seating comfort and quality of finish. At least the i7 would be better in these respects, its just absolutely huge.

Not only in Australia, it's the same in Germany and in a lesser extent in the Netherlands. Besides, haven't we always said EQS is no S-class?
EQS is a mere electric E class and the EQE is an electric C class, simple as that. If anyone is searching for an EV in S class territory, i7 is a more fitting proposition than EQS. If it weren't for it's absurd size.

Agree. MB needs to start launching REAL EVs. The EQ line up is an embarrassment for the brand at every level.

I wouldn't go that far to call it an embarassment. They just haven't got much typical Mercedes DNA in them. If MB would have managed to design a typical S class-like sedan as an EV, without any BS noone needs, made it the same price as an ICE S class and it would be a winner.

I saw an EQS SUV from the back a few days ago at the airport and wasnt impressed by the rear design, it looks like a blob and not at all like a Mercedes, very annonymous looking design. If someone gave me the choice of the W214 E-class and EQE there is no way I would buy an EQE. Its more expensive and uglier, plus with a cheaper looking interior.

I hope the next gen 2028 electric S-class will look like a proper S-class and not another blob like the current EQS,

MB really needs to move forward with its design language. I think the current S, E and C look great, but the interior quality should be best in class, which currently is not.

For the EVs, let's hope the upcoming C-Class can bring some real new ideas to the table, with a front end design that does not rely on a huge fake grille and a more distinctive rear end, without the silly light bar that everyone else in the industry seems to be using as well.
